R.I.P. Tomas Lindberg

2025-09-16 by Toondude | 51 Comments
In a recent social media post, At The Gates vocalist Tomas Lindberg has officially passed away. Back in March, Lindberg revealed that he was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, an aggressive form of mouth cancer. Later in May, a "medical setback" forced Lindberg to be placed in long-term care.

The band was in the middle of recording their upcoming 8th studio album, though Lindberg's vocals were finished the day before his surgery. While the album is expected to drop eventually, the future of the band's fate is now uncertain.

Lindberg was only 52 years old. Rest in Peace.

When I was reading the news about the Cancer whenever it was that it was posted, the tone of his statement definitely didn't sound good. Gone too soon. He made sure to get the vocals done before the surgery, though. Obviously, that was important to him and I can't wait to hear it.

Thanks for the recs, Hawks. Never listened to them either so I'll give them a shot. Are they Gothenburg in the same vein as Soilwork?

I know very little about this style of death metal outside of Soilwork and, like, In Flames lol. I'll for sure take a look.

Tomas was one of the reasons I wanted to be a vocalist, way, way back in the day.

I woke up yesterday and heard the news and it absolutely broke my heart.

I read that statement a while ago, and I agree, it definitely felt like he knew it was coming.

I'm glad he was able to record while he still had the means to do so. That final album will be the final feather in the hat of a long and incredibly glowing career. RIP.

I feel you, Panzer :c I used Blinded and Slaughter as my vocal warm ups for years.

also, PSA: The Flames of the End, their reuinion DVD/CD from Wacken, is a great overview of their material if you don't have time for the whole discog. classic performance of almost all the important stuff.

Said it in the Slaughter thread but if this man really recorded all of the vocals for an unreleased album ONE DAY before getting a cancer related surgery in his fucking mouth, just, god fucking damn what a badass.

This year has been fucking terrible for metal fans and to me this is almost as devastating as Ozzy. Slaughter of the Soul had such a massive impact on me and really helped shape my taste in music beyond what I was hearing from mainstream metal bands.

Hoping the band doesn’t hang it up, I don’t think the he would’ve wanted that. They’ve had such a good run of records since they reunited.

Huuuuuuuge RIP. Everyone's already said everything there is to say, but man, AtG has been baked into the DNA of so many sounds across the extreme music spectrum for decades now.

And for the guy who asked if they were Gothenburg in the Soilwork way, gotta say that while the later Soilwork stuff isn't as similar, the first two albums are pretty much directly working off the Slaughter of the Soul blueprint, vocals included

They also were extremely influential on the metalcore genre. As I Lay Dying, Unearth, Parkway Drive, Trivium, Heaven Shall Burn, I Killed The Prom Queen .. At The Gates is in their DNA.

Rest in Peace you absolute legend.
