One of the best to ever do it. It's been really tough seeing him deteriorate over the last decade, especially knowing all that he's been through. At least he's finally at peace.

please if you only know pet sounds use this as an excuse to dive into some of the other stuff like smile, surfs up, friends, today and sunflower. they have a looooooot of gems beyond just the big dog

Yeah, they have a ton of great records honestly. The overall discog is inconsistent for sure (Summer in Paradise is fucking ROUGH… though tbf, that’s more of a Mike Love vanity project), but the highs are absolutely incredible

Smiley Smile is my personal favorite

It’s such a unique and disjointed album and still managed to be so warm and beautiful

yeah between 15 big ones and summer in paradise things are unbelievably rough but thats mostly mike love and (hate to do my guy dirty but) al jardines fault for turning the band into a yacht rock act. the unhinged love you and unreleased even more unhinged adult child are major exceptions and are among the weirdest least commercial material this band ever made, for better or worse lol

but if you are talking just like, 1963-1973, its all dope for the most part and they were churning out at least 1 album a year if not 2 at that point

Looks like a Beach Boys run is in order for the next few days.

Tremendously horrible news, RIP to a legend

This man was one of the finest composers of pop singles in the history of American music, and the release of Pet Sounds proved him to be one of the few to make the Beatles want to step up their game. The Beach Boys and especially Brian brought so many nuanced ideas to the studio, improving upon techniques of the late Phil Spector, with their influence still being heard (whether consciously or not) in modern recording. Unfortunately a combination of pressure from Capitol Records, tensions with bandmates, substance abuse, mental health issues and Brian’s unyielding perfectionism stunted what could have been one of the most revolutionary pop albums of the century in Smile. I encourage anyone to listen to the rest of their catalogue especially Today!, Smiley Smile, Friends, Wild Honey, Sunflower, Surfs Up and Holland. A true loss to the music world and one that affects me personally as a fan of his. Rest in Peace Brian, a genius of music.

its honestly insane how ahead of the curve smile was in its construction, brian was basically tracking 16 bar suites and gluing them together the way you would compose in a daw today. so much of how he touched music was so revolutionary

My grandma (dad’s mom) was one of Brian Wilson’s mental health nurses in Santa Monica back in the day. She died when I was pretty young. Would love to have gotten to ask her about that.

its sad I never got to really get into the Beach Boys but I can say without a shadow of a doubt that I cant think of a person that has had a bigger influence in as many genres of music than Brian Wilson, RIP to the goat.

Grew up with my dad playing beach boys records non-stop around the house and every car trip. I still think God Only Knows is the best song of all time. He was an absolute legend of music, and this is the first time I've been properly affected by a musician or celebrity's death. RIP to the crazy bastard, this one hurts
