Bad Astronaut go Untethered 2024-09-10 by StrizzMatik | 11 Comments | Bad Astronaut have quietly announced a compilation of re-imagined songs through their Bandcamp page, titled Untethered, due for release November 8th, 2024. The lead single "Grey Suits", originally released on the band's 2001's debut EP Acrophobe, showcases a stripped-down somber piano and string arrangement quite different from the pop-punk stylings of the original recording and is available for streaming and for download upon pre-order of the album.
Singer/songwriter Joey Cape had this to say:
"This record was a real 'passion project' for me. Angus Cooke (cello, percussion) and Todd Capps (piano, keyboards) had been performing covers as an instrumental duo, which I affectionately called 'Tangus.' After hearing their takes on punk classics, I suggested we revisit the Bad Astronaut catalog in a stripped-down format. It wasn’t long before we began tracking pared-down versions of a selection of our songs. The album is titled Untethered—an elevated synonym for 'unplugged.' We’ve always appreciated hearing the raw essence of a composition, and we hope the fans do too."

Houston: We have a Drinking Problem is a classic. Acrophobe was good, and Twelve Small Steps, One Giant Disappointment was mostly a giant disappointment. I'll check this out, but if it's just Joey then it probably would have been better as a solo release.
| | | Very nice, Joey can do no wrong
| | | No Bad Astronaut since 2006 and no Lagwagon since 2019 seems pretty wrong ;)
| | | Musically he can do no wrong, I think his personal life took a beating, as was evident in his solo release in 2021.
| | | He's had some travesty in his life for sure.
| | | Brilliant song. Love his songs that utilise piano.
| | | here's hoping this leads to Acrophobe getting put (back?) on streaming; not a huge deal, but the convenience would be appreciated
| | | Acrophobe is on Spotify
| | | @Willie agreed, Houston is absolutely a 5 record through and through. What didn't you like about Twelve Steps? For me it kind of straddles the immediacy of Acrophobe with Houston's more expansive arrangements, but it doesn't always work great. Having it be forever unfinished and pasted together from demos with Derrick might be a reason it never hit like Houston does for me - the production and simplified arrangements definitely aren't as interesting, but it's saved with great songwriting
Also fyi but Fat finally released a presser for this, it's not just Joey the rest of the surviving band is involved (except Marko I guess)
| | | Cool. Also totally missed they put out a new single a few years ago?? I know he said they were done when their drummer died but I'd love a new album or at least a tour.
| | | Twelve Steps is easily superior to Acrophobe imo, I had no idea it was unfinished
