RIP Cheetah Chrome 2026-09-14 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 0 Comments | Cheetah Chrome, the guitarist best known for his work with Dead Boys and Rocket from the Tombs, died on September 13 at the age of 71.
His Dead Boys bandmates confirmed his passing, remembering both his influence on punk rock and his kindness away from the stage. They offered condolences to his family and asked that their privacy be respected.
Born Eugene Richard O'Connor in Cleveland, Ohio, Chrome played in Rocket from the Tombs before helping form Dead Boys alongside vocalist Stiv Bators, guitarist Jimmy Zero, bassist Jeff Magnum and drummer Johnny Blitz.
The group became closely associated with New York's CBGB scene, releasing Young, Loud and Snotty in 1977 and We Have Come for Your Children the following year. Chrome co-wrote Sonic Reducer with Rocket from the Tombs bandmate David Thomas; the song subsequently became one of Dead Boys' defining recordings.
Chrome remained active through later Dead Boys lineups and a Rocket from the Tombs reunion. He also formed Batusis with New York Dolls guitarist Sylvain Sylvain and released his solo record Solo in 2013.
