Damn. Much too young.
| |
Hard RIP.
| |
Rest in peace Alexi. 2021 is already starting awful
| |
Jesus, he was younger than me. Saw them live with Soilwork many years ago. He had such a strong presence on stage. Rest in peace.
| |
Damn this is tragic, dude was way too young. I saw them back in 2013 and they ruled, was super impressed by him
| |
Worshipped this band in my teens, had so much fun blasting them. Huge RIP - Laiho was a legend and a guitar hero, but I'm guessing he ultimately drank his way to an early grave :[ too damn soon
| |
RIP
| |
>Worshipped this band in my teens, had so much fun blasting them
as far as metal bands that appeal to teens go, they were pretty fucking good and their early stuff still holds up
that said, laiho was bodom: image, personality, voice, songwriting, guitar chops, flashy soloing, everything. i dont care if anyone thinks thats unfair. fuckin RIP :[
| |
Laiho was a superstar around here by 2008
RIP way too young
| |
This upsets me a lot. One of my favourite guitarists and CoB got me into extreme metal. R.I.P.
| |
So damn 2020 takes Laiho from us too? (He died last week so it was probably still 2020).
I love Follow the Reaper. Sad day, and I'll be spinning Bodom exclusively today
| |
Wtf this is terrible. I was never a huge fan but his vocals and charisma were one of a kind. RIP far too soon.
| |
Wow, that hits hard as hell. COB was one of my first ever metal bands I listened to... RIP
| |
Said in the Hatebreeder thread a lot of what’s being said in here, Laiho was iconic, a proper rockstar and he was my hero when I was learning to play metal guitar as a teenager.
RIP
Yow yow
| |
Damn 41 years old only. Off to blast Hatebreeder HARD. RIP legend.
| |
Fuck - 41 is no age RIP
| |
rest in peace king
| |
Pretty sure COB got most into "heavy" metal so this is a HUGE rip.........
| |
i can't even describe how upset by this i am. i've had artists i've cared about die before, but this is the first time one of "my" musicians has ever passed and it just fucking sucks. such a genuine soul and talent. metal won't be the same w/o him.
| |
Huge RIP, gonna spin Something Wild in memory.
| |
Band was such a pivotal one for me growing up and Laiho was always one of my favorite guitarists, this is just awful. Rest in peace
| |
man, That's awful.
several times i saw him concert in Japan. this is terrible!
i think he hinted something after COB disbanded and take a brand new name.
Rest in Peace
| |
Oh no. I think Bodom was literally my first dm band. This hurts. RIP
| |
RIP
| |
Big factor on me getting into Metal. Hard RIP
| |
damn, RIP. I never got heavy into COB, but I always liked Follow the Reaper and respected his talent.
I saw Steve Vai on my 17th birthday, and with me was a friend whose dad was in the radio business. So he was able to get us aftershow passes for meeting and autographs. One of the things we had him sign was that month's issue of Guitar World, which featured him, Wylde, and Laiho (https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/x3sAAOSw1IVbw5BB/s-l400.jpg). I then got it custom framed with the signed ticket and the aftershow pass, with Vai's logo cut out at the top. To this day it hangs at the front of my music room.
Gonna listen to FTR and appreciate that memorabilia a little more now.
| |
...wait, what?!
Oh crap. RIP. I always liked Hate Death Crew Deathroll when I was younger.
| |
Children of Bodom were so important to me as a young teenage metalhead many years ago... I can't believe this.
| |
Holy fuck, crazy young. Rip
| |
YIP hard
| |
Can people like stop dying for like 5 seconds please that'd be great.
| |
Hard RIP, this is really sad
| |
Wild Child is eternal
| |
This was not the news I wanted to wake up to today. =(
| |
:[ not even the biggest fan of Bodom but still sad news
| |
Just awful. RIP.
I was never the biggest fan of Bodom, but they are undeniably fun. Gonna spin some today. Dude influenced so many metal musicians
| |
2020's curse continues.
RIP
| |
Wtf holy shit, so young. Listened to so much COB back in undergrad. RIP
| |
what the hell man :[[[[
RIP
| |
this band helped me through so much of my life.
| |
Major RIP. Such an important band for my formative years.
| |
Way too young.
| |
CoB got me into extreme metal back in high school, so this is shattering news. RIP you wild child.
| |
And today was the day Peter Steele was born. Hard RIP to two legends.
| |
The song Downfall got me into metal and basically music when I heard it on Baker 3 in 2006 and I remember getting sent out of class for listening to COB on my ipod nano so although I haven't listened to them in a decade this has me feeling pretty shit
| |
Honestly this is the saddest I've been about an artists death so far. I have been late to the COB party as i got into them when they released hexed but i was obsessed with that album. it lead me to go on and find bands like dissection and dark tranquility. COB has been such an important band for me. massive loss.
Alexi is definitely one of a kind and was one of the most iconic musicians in metal. never forgotten, rest in power x
| |
"just don't be an ass" [2]
| |
Jamming first 4 today RIP
| |
I was so excited to hear what Bodom After Midnight had in store for us. This one hurts hard...
| |
I was so excited to hear what Bodom After Midnight had in store for us. This one hurts hard...
| |
"we warned him about what would happen if they kept making shitty music"
REALLY DUDE!? REALLY!?
| |
As with a lot of you, CoB were one of the many early reasons that I got into metal. RIP, way too young to leave this planet.
| |
^^ What purpose do these kind of comments serve?
| |
"^^ What purpose do these kind of comments serve?"
IDK but this thread has quickly become a fucking dumpster fire
| |
Regarding the effect of Children of Bodom and in turn Laiho, I remember one day when I took the bus to go downtown, and came across a girl blasting her headphones with "Red Light in My Eyes, Part 2".
Right after the neoclassical keyboard part halfway and as the band shredded onward, she smiled instantaneously.
| |
Damn.
Children of Bodom was one of the biggest influences of my first band.
Also... yeah. Wtf is up with this thread? Are y'all trying to establish a new mental illness or something?
| |
Damn, so sad.
| |
haven’t rly listened to CoB in a long time but he def was important when I was getting into guitar in the early 2000s-ish timeframe. rip
| |
Absolutely hideous news. His impact on the lives and works of thousands can't be denied. Thoughts are with his family.
| |
From now on we are enemies, You and I.
| |
never heard his music but 41 years old is just so shitty. Clearly leaves behind a big legacy as well. RIP
| |
Yeah, uncomfortably young :[
| |
From what!? Well shit, 2021 is off to a fantastic start. RIP.
| |
Another massive blow. 41 is entirely too young for anyone to lose their life. RIP and hopefully 2021 spares us of any further losses of the magnitude that we have sadly gotten used to over the last year.
| |
Hard RIP! My friends and I really looked up to Alexi back in high school and now I'm learning he was only 12 years older than me. Terribly sad news
| |
"this road is gonna kill me" (excerpt line out of CoB's final album)
I know he's alluded to his mortality before that song, but shit - I was hoping he was just being in 'character' with the Wild Child persona...
don't know if Bodom after Midnight was gonna be all that big of a stylistic triumph, especially with Warmen off the keys - but this is abrupt and jarring to me...
I don't think he'd want to RIP, more like RIW, but I hope it's inner peace anyway (assuming there's an afterlife)... we lose another great talent. dude was my age, too, I never knew that... dammit yet another 'hero' gone =/
| |
ah man RIP, the kind of musician you'd never expect to read of like this for now
| |
RIP
| |
The worst way the new year can start off. COB was huge for me as a teen who just started to listen to metal, but their last album was also solid. Dude was an amazing guitarist and a true bandleader. R.I.P.
| |
Awful fucking way to start the year, RIP hard.
| |
he was a good guitarist probably underappreciated for how good he was, listen to the first few COB albums to see what I mean. Anyway he seemed on a good path a few years ago after basically stopping drinking and partying.
| |
RIP he died really young
FTR was one of my very first melodeath albums : (
| |
Fuck, RIP. Didn't start to appreciate Bodom until the last couple years, but I fucking love what I've heard so far. Always nice to hear a metal band that sounds like they genuinely have fun doing what they do.
| |
Had so much fun listening to Bodom growing up. RIP.
| |
Fuck man, I've got so many good memories of jamming CoB in the car with my friends in high school. 41 is way too young. RIP.
| |
RIP : (
| |
"Big factor on me getting into Metal. Hard RIP" [2]
| |
When I started coming to Sput around 09, I don't think there was any artist more loved than Bodom and by extension Alexi (maybe Jari) around here. I don't think any 1 artist had more influence on my taste going forward from the moment I heard them than him, extremely hard RIP.
| |
Ugh, this is incredibly sad. Like for many others, COB was instrumental in introducing me to more extreme metal. Rest in power, Alexi
| |
this hits me hard. one of my favourite metal bands when I was a teen. never knew he was ill
| |
rip
| |
wtf havent read one comment because i had to type so fast wtf!!!!! Been ages since i heard cob actively but i loved them as a teen. Was a nice world to sink in. Rarely was a fan of melodic death metal or power metal, but this had a nice energy and spirit! Even though I always remembered Alexi as a well hearted drunk rebel (I say drunk, because I havent understood half the things he said in interviews he used to mumble kinda lol ^^) but this all created the charm and spirit of children of bodom. He was a unique personality in metal. He died craaazy young. Saw them 2 times live. Crazy how time flies and life developes. I dont wish to witness the passing of time ;(
RIP forever
| |
RIP Alexi. Haven't listened to CoB in ages but those first 4 albums are legendary
| |
RIP
| |
Oh damn, RIP. I remember enjoying "Hate Crew Deathroll" in my early twenties.
| |
holy fuuuuuuuuck.
| |
Can't believe this. Really wish this didn't happen, but RIP. He and his band made a massive impact on my musical orientation during high school, and it will forever stay with me. Rest easy, my man.
| |
damn big RIP
| |
Too young too soon. Too many deaths from too talented artists. RIP
| |
So awful. Alexi was very inspiring while I was growing up. He was amazing on stage and has created so many classic riffs/songs. He will be sorely missed. Just bought his book so at least have that to read along with the soon to be released Bodom After Midnight cd to celebrate his life.
| |
this one cuts deep. many 25-40 year olds were inspired by his playing to pick up a guitar. myself included
YEOW in peace good sir
| |
NO FUCKING WAY. First MF DOOM, now this?!?!
| |
thats a big sadge
| |
Damn man. Too young. RIP
| |
RIP to a Sputnik legend
| |
Glad all the shitty comments got deleted.
| |
FUCK
| |
Damn. RIP
| |
Jammed Follow The Reaper this morning. Laiho lives through his tunes. RIP.
| |
Alexi Laiho was an absolutely wicked guitarist and I'm sure he's shredding hard up above. Goddamn RIP
| |
Fuck off.
Damn. Just started listening to Follow the Reaper for the first time in nearly a decade last week.
I imagine isolation due to COVID-19, being unable to tour, and a history of alcohol and drug abuse was not a good combination.
| |
One of the greatest
| |
Damn. Rest in peace to him, 41 is way too young and he was ridiculously talented. I hope at least he is having an insane jam sesh right now upstairs with some of our other gone-too-soon musicians.
Also, in response to some of the other questions on here asking about the cause of death/etc it's probably best not speculate if we're not being told the explicit reason, but, usually when this is done by the family of the person who died it's either because of an overdose or suicide, sadly...I think a lot of people aren't appreciating just how much of an impact all of this lockdown bullshit is having upon so many of us, worldwide. Mentally it's totally destroyed me and I just have lost 3 of my friends in the past 4 or 5 weeks now, 1 who hung himself and 2 who overdosed (1 of them we know for sure was intentional) -- all because of the anguish they were dealing with from all of this fucking their lives up. I've had it bad enough being basically bankrupted and losing my business, I imagine it's gotta be even worse for musicians who truly live to play and rely upon it for income.
| |
First MF DOOM now this? So tragic and like Doom very young. R.I.P. Man
| |
RIP to one of the greatest modern metal guitarist! Rock in Power dude! This reminds us not to abuse our body with alcohol(and drugs), take care of it while we are still young.
| |
This was a shock. A great loss of an amazing talent. RIP wildchild. Truly one of the best
| |
"RIP to one of the greatest modern metal guitarist! Rock in Power dude! This reminds us not to abuse our body with alcohol(and drugs), take care of it while we are still young."
It's a beautiful sentiment! Being that easy...that'd be lovely!
| |
Well this is sad as fuck.
| |
Condolences to him. I used to listen to Children of Bodom in 2010 until I stopped to listen to their newest stuff.
| |
I was obsessed with CoB in my teens. RIP
| |
Just found out about this and I'm devastated . I was really looking forward to what he could do with his new band and felt like he still had a lot left in the tank musically. He definitely seemed hungry too after cob broke up. Sigh, hard rip.
| |
One of the better frontmen. He was the reason I got into extreme metal and playing guitar which I still do to this day every day. RIP
| |
holy shit i was hoping this was just a bad pun and he had put out a song called rip or something
=(((((((((((((((((((((((((((
| |
RIP Alexi
| |
jesus I assumed he was older. I was never a big fan, but friends back in High School were 12-13 years ago, and having CoB blasted in cars was an early intro to metal for me. RIP.
| |
Damn no way... RIP hard, one of the all time great guitarists and one of the best melody creators.
| |
Like so many others, Alexi and COB were really the ones who got me into metal and shaped my music taste for the last couple decades. I was fortunate enough to see them live twice in 2014 and 2019, two of the most fun shows I've been to. I suppose the reaper comes for us all. R.I.P.
| |
And I'm kicking myself at the moment for not attending when they were in town. And yeah, CoB was one of the key bands for me too which helped get into extreme metal
| |
Damn, never was big into CoB but this is a tragic loss indeed. His influence on countless guitar players is to be admired.
RIP

This took me completely by surprise, I had no idea Laiho was sick. Too young to die. RIP
| |
Hate Me was one of the songs that got me into metal back in 2000. Damn this sucks. :/
| |
Never really a Bodom fan myself but this is just terrible. Way too soon. 41 is nothing. RIP. In fact, I'll get Hatebreeder right now.
| |
Wow wtf.
| |
RIP. Children of Bodom played a big role in me getting into extreme metal and I remember when I signed up here they were a band that got brought up constantly. Gonna have to jam the debut and Hate Crew for some nostalgia and out of respect for the man. Rest easy
| |
For the ones wondering how he passed so young... Not sure if you saw him in 2019, he was basically dying. Dude looked like Mick Mars. I know he delt with a lot mental abuse and obviously turned to alcohol for an outlet. Going to guess that just caught up to him.
I've been spinning COB since the news broke... Seriously, their discography holds up so well. Such good albums.
| |
Such an extraodinary guitarrist, it really saddens me that we lost him, that day the news caught me out of guard
