Radiohead Release Hacked Demos

2019-06-11 by Masochist | 65 Comments
Radiohead have decided to release 18 hours of stolen demo music from the 'OK Computer' era. It will cost £18 (~$23), and will be available for the next 18 days on their Bandcamp. This is in response to the music being hacked and held for ransom. The band made a statement on their Facebook page:

We got hacked last week - someone stole Thom’s minidisk archive from around the time of OK Computer, and reportedly demanded $150,000 on threat of releasing it.

So instead of complaining - much - or ignoring it, we’re releasing all 18 hours on Bandcamp in aid of Extinction Rebellion.

Just for the next 18 days. So for £18 you can find out if we should have paid that ransom.
Never intended for public consumption (though some clips did reach the cassette in the OK Computer reissue) it’s only tangentially interesting. And very, very long. Not a phone download. Rainy out, isn’t it though?

Jx

As stated, proceeds will help benefit Extinction Rebellion, a non-violent protest movement with the expressed aim of having the government acknowledge and make actions against climate change.

You can listen to and purchase the music from the minidisk on the band's bandcamp:

EDIT: Here is a Google Doc that has timestamps marked for all 18 hours of music. Credit to Supercoolguy64 for the link -

the version of Lift 10 minutes into disc 15 is the definitive version-- absolutely revelatory. Had it been released in '97 it would have been a game changer.

They really think they're going to get paid by blackmailing artists to release material? Easier to just release it yourself and laugh.

It's definitely cool but can be repetitive as there is no strucure and it's just random recordings spliced together. First track has Electioneering 3 times.

22: of track 2 has 5 minutes of subway noise...

Radiohead remain one of my favourite bands, yet even I find the idea of this kind of dull. I imagine there's the odd gem hidden underneath all the rubble, but not sure how determined I am to seek it out. Maybe it could be worth delving into as a curiosity, if you really care about the history surrounding the recordings etc. I don't know.

I'm hoping the condensed highlights get 'released' (somehow) at a later date.

the drama keeps getting spicier, the google doc got updated saying there was never any ransom and the leaker asked a certain price for the files, got a shitton of pressure from /mu/ and reddit to release it and just decided to drop it for free. he never even contacted the band, allegedly

this is some Greek epic shit already
