People with mental illness are often times predisposed to abuse drugs, or sometimes it runs in the family, a lot of times these people have broken homes and struggle.

Is mental illness a choice too?

How about this: It's partially a choice to do drugs. Ultimately you're the one who makes the decision, but there are certainly factors outside of your control that make you more or less likely to make that decision. Shit isn't just black and white.

A good man, honestly. He didn't have any major controversy. His recent output has been alright. He never had any huge lulls in most of his discography, and he seemed like a pretty decent person.

A lot of the recent high-profile musician deaths have been from people who had tarnished their legacy with some bad albums later on, were widely criticized by the music industry, or they just didn't seem like a good person. Miller, he didn't really fall into any of those categories. Although I never got into him, this hit me a little closer than most musician deaths do. Hard R.I.P from me.

"the choice to do drugs is yes, a choice. addiction to such drugs, is not."

Yeah, exactly. The choice to consume drugs knowing full well what will happen afterwards and how difficult it is to rid yourself of it is a generally foolhardy decision.

people aren't 100% aware of the long-term consecuenses of drug abuse most of the time--
most are vaguely aware that that shit isn't good, they know about the posibility of addiction, but knowledge about all the problems that come along with hard drug abuse isn't somethin people most vulnerable to it have.

the vast majority of people who experiment with drugs do so in their teens. teenagers have an underdeveloped prefrontal cortex -- meaning higher impulse, less ratiocinating more emotional / insecurity driven behavior. also no one could possible ever presage the abject horror that is addiction before trying a drug to which they were unwittingly predisposed. don't be mad that u were an angry little recluse as a teen casavir and no one ever offered you drugs u fckin dweeb

If you donMt feel bad for people with addictions because doing drugs is a choice you also can’t feel bad for any alcoholic. It’s the same fucking shit and people who don’t understand that can’t see past their own damn privilege. The criminalization of drugs is the worst fucking thing to happen to America and it’s one of, if not THE, main reasons America/American capitalism is going to crash and burn.

But for real, hard RIP. He deserved had a lot ahead of him even still.

RIP. Fucking addiction sucks, man.

If you think having an addiction is an excuse to shun responsibility for actions, you're wrong.

But if you think addiction is entirely a choice, you're just as wrong. Most people are predisposed to it through genetics. A lot of drug addicts and alcoholics also have mental and behavioral health issues, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression, borderline personality disorder, etc etc. It's not as simple as labeling an addict an idiot because they knew the consequences from the start. There are plenty of people on this planet who used a drug at a young age and did not get addicted. There are also a good amount of people that are high functioning members of society that use recreationally just fine. It usually starts off with the "lighter" drugs such as cocaine, ecstasy, pills, etc etc and sooner or later the brain tells that person it's not enough. Addiction is a fucking disease of the mind. It's been scientifically proven. I have not met one addict or alcoholic who grew up wanting to be a junkie or a drunk, so get off of your high horses and have some fuckinf empathy.

"they do it knowing the consequences"

nope. they get lied to in school with over-exaggerations, or the shit gets hyped to them as a good lifestyle by addicts who are high at the time (or some are in denial about the negative aspects. I've known kids that died who acted like they didn't have a problem). also, they start drugs because they feel broken within to begin with.

Y'all need to not say shit if you don't have anything decent to say. This is someone's life you're talking about and of course you gotta come in with the "don't do drugs and u won't get addicted" shit. Yea, fucking obviously, but it's never so black and white.

If you think not doing drugs somehow makes you superior to those who choose to take drugs, you'd better check yourself. Your moral high horses read more as a disgusting lack of empathy and compassion for other human beings.
"Someone died way too young, but fuck them, they did drugs so I don't feel bad for them" --- that's what that sentiment sounds like to me.

RIP hard. Never been a huge fan of his stuff but I think I'm gonna go back and check out some of his material I never got around to hearing.

Honestly if you have never felt so low and hit rock bottom where you don't care what happens to you and you just want to escape everything that is around you and you feel like giving up on everyone because you feel like everyone gave up on you, then you might not understand why people get addicted to drugs.
