Gorillaz show some 'Humility'

2018-06-01 by Toondude | 50 Comments
British virtual band-Damon Albarn animated music project, Gorilla have now officially released the music videos for their new singles 'Humility' and 'Lake Zurich'. The songs come from the group's new album The Now Now, which is scheduled to be released on June 29th. The music video for 'Humilty' features cameos from Jack Black, Alex Okafor, Dexter Homan, Brent Martin, Remi Kabaka, and Will Dewitt. The song also features famous jazz guitarist George Benson.

According to Albarn, the album will be "pretty much just me singing" and "very sort of in the world of 2-D", a different approach compared to the band's previous record Humanz, which featured several hip-hop and pop artists. The album will also feature a new character named "Ace", who will replace the groups previous member, Murdoc, who was apparently incarcerated.

Why the fuck is the leader of the Gangreen Gang replacing Murdoc. That’s my only question.

2-D singing on every track, only necessary features, a short tracklist, two great singles, this is already shaping up to be infinitely better than Humanz.

First track is great. Not sure about the last record as I didn't listen to it. Heard bad stuff.

I dig it hard. I have high hopes for this one. Hopefully it blows Humanz out of the water.

It's already better than humanz, because that dumpster fire didn't have two listenable songs on it. (That video is unuasually bad when compared to other gorillaz videos tho)

Lake Zurich is straight fire.

Exactly what I and many others wanted, very welcome news. Humility is fantastic and better than probably anything from Humanz, and Lake Zurich is fine.

i mean i love Albarn and specially Gorillaz. All their stuff is great to me, even The Fall has some cute tunes, but i don't get people that just want a 2-D centric, few features Gorillaz album, like... The whole deal of the project was to collaborate with different artists and come up collectively with what every new the album would be like. Musically, the idea is Albarn working with OTHER people, otherwise why not just call it a solo album?

I mean mood-wise I feel like 2-D has always been pretty distinct from Albarn on Blur or solo-projects. Also, tracks like Lake Zurich would be totally out of place on any Damon Albarn solo LP. So judging on those two tracks, I'm expecting something that fits in the Gorillaz catalogue. (The collabs could be more on the production this time)

Not big on either of these tracks, though the "Humility" video is great. This album is supposedly going to have very few collabs, which will hopefully make for a more consistent record. I'm really struggling to appreciate Gorillaz' recent work lately. I yearn for the self-titled/Demon Days sounds.

rabidfish I think there needs to be a balance. Humanz clearly had problems with its identity and flow, just too many ideas reliant on the talent of all the guest singers, and it was underwhelming especially given how strong the s/t, Demon Days, and Plastic Beach are. A new album being more focused with less people messing with it is just what is needed, and Albarn seems to understand that now given his statement.

Yea, i don't think having few guests is a bad idea, either, just that Humanz isn't all that different conceptually compared to their other records at all. Lots of features, lots of different genres and song-ideas that hardly attempt to be cohesive narrative or stylistically-wise. Gorillaz is track-by-track band, they've always been like that. But apparently only in Humanz that was an issue.

I mean, i know a lot of people that don't like Gorillaz exactly because of this, but seeing this argument used by people that liked the band's other records baffles me.

U know what the actual problem with Humanz is, imo? the production. It's flat, lifeless and boring and never brings out the best out of any track. Seeing them live has opened my eyes to this glaring issue that most don't bring up or just mention it. The songs themselves are pretty dope, and when played with actual instruments (specially real percussion and bass) they come out as more fresh and fun to listen to. I mean, it's still their weakest 'real' album, but people shit too much on it for the wrong reasons.

Humanz isn’t terrible and it follows the Gorillaz template but the songwriting is more sparse and forgettable. The production is part of it but most of the songs being like 30 seconds-3 minutes long while hardly even progressing is also the problem. Plastic Beach is a lot more progressive and ambitious while having a comparable amount of guest singers.

that sounds more like someone who actually listens to the band, most arguments i've read against Humanz is 'hurr durr too many guests, wurz 2-D'.

Fuck off.

It sounds like The Now Now is to Humanz as The Fall was to Plastic Beach, and I am so down for that. I loved the fall and if this album is more focused than that record I'll be very happy.

Eh. The vid for Humility is amusing but the song is bland as all fuck. Lake Zurich is much better, very hardcore 80s new wave vibe. Still waiting for the day this group puts out a song I like half as much as anything from their first two albums.

Have you heard Hollywood and Idaho @pots?

there are both live versions up in the yutumbu and they are pretty nice too. This new album is pretty much the equivalent of The Fall to Humanz: Low steaks, just Albarn fucking about between gigs, but a little more produced this time. I'm totally down for it.

First song is great but it worries me that Lake Zurich is purely instrumental. I'm concerned we're gonna get another "The Fall" and it'll just feel like mashed together b-sides and experimentation for the sake of noodling with toys.
