New Alice In Chains Album 2009-05-19 by TheNewWhack | 32 Comments | Taken from http://shar.es/xgn
The Pulse of Radio reports: ALICE IN CHAINS recently finished work on its first studio album in 14 years, although the band did not preview any of the new material this past weekend at the Rock On The Range festival in Columbus, Ohio, where they played live for the first time since late last year. Even though it once seemed like the world would never see a new ALICE IN CHAINS record, guitarist Jerry Cantrell told The Pulse of Radio that he’s pleased with what the group has accomplished this time. “We’re really proud of it,” he said. “I’m really proud of all of us, man, that we decided to take this trip and decided to take the chance, you know what I mean, to continue and to move forward. The record’s a win. Regardless of how it does, it’s a win already for us, ’cause we really dig it and we stand behind it, and each other.”
The yet-to-be-titled disc will be out in mid-September via Virgin Records, a division of EMI Music, and is the first full-length ALICE IN CHAINS studio effort since a self-titled 1995 album.
The new disc marks the recording debut of vocalist William DuVall. Original singer Layne Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002.
Jerry Cantrell, drummer Sean Kinney and bassist Mike Inez regrouped in 2005 for a charity show before embarking on several tours in 2006 and 2007 with DuVall on the mic.
A preview in the Los Angeles Times called the new album “recognizably thundering and gloomy,” with an acoustic track called “Your Decision” followed by what the reporter described as “a seven-minute epic built on heavy slabs of guitar, drums and bass, something like BLACK SABBATH but far quicker.”
When asked about stepping into the shoes of Staley, DuVall told the Times, “It’s a big thing. I’ve joined a group that has a strong identity and a strong legacy. Nobody’s sitting here who wants to, in any way, disrespect or sully that legacy. You want to add to it.”
All of ALICE IN CHAINS’ previous albums and EPs were on Columbia Records.
ALICE IN CHAINS will support KID ROCK at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan on Saturday, July 18. Also scheduled to appear is CYPRESS HILL. Tickets are on sale via Tickets.com and at the Comerica Park box office.

Stoked for this.
| | | I remember watching a youtube video with the new singer awhile ago and it was pretty good. Hopefully the album will come out well.
| | | I hope this is good
Stayley was the best thing about them tho, he gave them that underground edge that made things a bit more interesting
| | | underground edge
| | | I want this album to be really good. DuVall was really impressive when I saw them in Toronto and exceeded all expectations I had of him.
I didn't hear a bad note or harmony the entire show and they played every song that I wanted to hear.
| | | YES! YES! YES!
| | | Looking forward to this. Expectations aren't particually high though.

| | | This will be awesome. Like, seriously. DuVall is surprisingly good.
| | | I saw them live with Duvall. It was my first concert.
he is definitely great, but no Layne Staley.
Regardless, I am looking forward to this.
| | | DuVall was an excellent replacement for Staley, despite this I feel this will be a disappointment no matter what. I'll try to hold my bias when listening to this. Cantrell did most of the writing material anyway. "Nutshell" was amazing though, fantastic stuff by Staley when he was the songwriter.
| | | yeah but Staley's voice is pretty hard to replace.
regardless, DuVall was a great choice and probably the only choice they had. I'm definitely looking forward to some new material.
| | | I still feel like Jerry should just put out albums like his solo stuff, but just under the Alice in Chains name. He wrote most of the songs anyways. Duvall is by no means a bad singer, but this just isn't going to feel like Alice in Chains.
| | | I hope youre wrong Merkaba, but I have a lingering feeling you won't be. I dunno how this will have the classic AiC feel without Staley, and given that the era of music it was conceived in has long passed.
| | | Exactly my feelings. I mean Jerry was one of the best songwriters during that short time so I'm sure they will be plenty of good stuff, but I think unfortunately there will be some cringe worthy material as well. Most likely due to the impossible task of replacing Layne.
| | | i just started gettin in to these guys real heavy recently, ive heard videos of duvall and he sound great, i know everyone will compare him to layne but every one needs to just try to judge it for what it is, with and open mind i think
| | | I want for this to be good so badly.
| | | I don't think replacing Layne is really the issue, I'm worried they just made a watered down version of their older music. If this is heavy and maybe a bit experimental it could work, but I'm expecting generic post-grunge.
| | | I don't think Alice In Chains works without Layne Staley. Nirvana without Cobain? Soundgarden without Cornell? Pearl Jam without Vedder? Without these guys I think all you have is a bunch of mediocre grunge bands, even if the AIC replacement sounds good.
| | | No Layne Staley no care.

I would agree with you, but the difference is that in the case of each of the other bands the frontman was/is the main composer of the music, whereas Layne didnt write nearly as much as any of the others did, only a couple of songs on his own
| | | sounds gay as all hell
| | | You can't replace Layne, but I am still stoked to hear this.
| | | wont be the same without Stayley, but still looking forward to this.
| | | Should have just formed a new band, I am not looking forward to this without Staley
| | | Should be good, but I won't over-excite myself (saving that for the new Slayer and Megadeth)This Message Edited On 05.20.09
| | | Duvall's really good by the look of it. I'd be be interested to see how this turns out, I'm definitely looking forward to it!
| | | This better be a damn good AiC-revival, or they just should've quit completely when Staley died.
| | | Not to echo everyone else, but I really hope this is good enough to keep the legacy going and not just a "whatever" album
| | | Jerry Cantrell was a big part of their sound, so im setting my expectations high.
| | | Meh.
