John Butler Changes Trio Again

2009-03-29 by DaveyBoy EMERITUS | 16 Comments
John Butler is set to part ways with his current bandmates to make way for a new "Trio" line-up.

Drummer Michael Barker and bass player Shannon Birchall have been part of John Butler Trio for the past six years and have constantly toured and recorded with Butler during that period.

In a press release, Butler said that "Michael and Shannon have been by far the best line-up I have performed with in the John Butler Trio to date." He cites purely artistic reasons for the split.

Barker and Birchall will play their last gigs as part of the trio in April before Butler heads back into the studio to record his fifth studio album.

Hmmm, I'm unsure this is the right move. These 2 guys were darn good.

That makes me very sad. Hopefully John knows what he's doing. At least there will be a new CD coming up...eventually.

Yeah, he already changed drummers between Three and its follow up and there was no descernable defect. They were arguably one of the best rhythm sections in AusRock, so we'll see what eventuates.

I think this is a very silly move on behalf of John Butler. I agree with you Legalduck, the quality better be up to standards on his next album

Ouch. Mike and Shannon were great at what they did, it's a real shame to see them split with John. Like ohcleverhansyou said, I hope he knows what he's doing.

damn. I don't doubt JB's decision-making though, especially after Grand National.

The rhythm section had a lot to do with that being such a good CD.
