The Offspring guitarist on making records 2008-12-18 by Alex101 | 14 Comments | San Diego radio station 91X recently sat down with The Offspring guitarist Noodles to discuss how they make their records. He threw in his two cents, saying:
"Records are never finished, they're abandoned. I mean, you could work on a record for the rest of your life, fine tune things for the rest of your life. And your ear will change, your feeling about things will change and eventually you just have to go 'Hey man, this is good.' And just let it go."
The band released their latest album Rise and Fall, Rage and Grace last June. It is their first album of new material since 2003's Splinter, and sold very well due to the success of its latest single "You're Gonna Go Far, Kid", which spent 11 weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks chart, proving the song to be one of the most successful singles the band has released in their twenty-four-year career.
The Offspring have been touring randomly in support of their new album. Rumors persist that the band will be on the road in the U.S. next year.

There is always a point when working more on something will make it worse instead of better. A person should learn to identify that point and stop. Which is something some bands don't know how to do.
| | | I enjoyed RAFRAG despite disappointing reviews, You're Gonna Go Far Kid stayed in my head for ages.
| | | I too enjoyed their last album quite a bit.
| | | The Offspring rule!!
| | | What he said in this article definitely makes sense and I agree.
Plus I enjoyed "Rise And Fall..." as well.
| | | It was pretty good but it was definitely no Smash
| | | Rise and Fall was alright. I'm just glad that it didn't turn out to be another Splinter.
And what he said makes perfect sense. I feel that way about almost every song I've written.
| | | He's made a very valid point. I wonder if it was also a slight reference to Chinese Democracy, especially considering that pretty comical fiasco with them wanting to use the name for one of their albums.

the offspring still should of spent longer on their more recent albums in my opinion as they were far from great be honest
5 years is more than enough time to make a decent album.
RFRAG was ok but not great imo. This Message Edited On 12.18.08
| | | You'll Go Far Kid annoys me, but Hammerhead was awesome. Pity they don't play it on the radio any more, its all Go Far Kid.
Dude speaks truth.

To me, both songs really don't annoy me.This Message Edited On 12.19.08

And Noodles is right on, IMO. Imagine if the Offspring would've spent six more years working on "Smash"...it would've been "Americana" after a while. And any longer than that would've made it "Splinter," and we would have never had the greatness that was "Smash" to begin with. It's the same with any band, any album, any song. Good point to bring up.
Anyways...hopefully this hints at a new Offspring album in the works. 'Splinter' was nothing special, but the last album, while maybe not breathtaking, did show that the band still had something good to offer. This Message Edited On 12.20.08
