Coldplay To Disband Next Year?

2008-11-19 by YouAreMySilence | 62 Comments
Chris Martin, lead singer of the soft rock superstars Coldplay, spoke to the Daily Express hinting about the band disbanding at the end of next year.

Quote:
Singer Chris Martin feels the group would be better off calling it a day in a couple of years’ time.

Mr Gwyneth Paltrow says: “I’m 31 now and I don’t think that bands should keep going past 33.

“So we’re trying to pack in as much as possible. Up until the end of next year, we’ll just go for it in every sense. I don’t believe in time off. We’ve still got most of our hair, we can still fit into our musical trousers and we’ve got to make the most of that.”
The band is currently on a world tour promoting their latest multi platinum album Viva La Vida.

I also agree with Hurricane, tons of bands are out there to rock till they keel over, this band obviously doesnt have that mindset.

it bothers me when people say a band should quit cause they suck or they are too old. Like AC/DC, I've heard many people say they should quit around here, but you know how many concerts of theirs are sold out? All of them. People still want to see them..... many many people. Also they obviously still enjoy themselves. Just because you're 33 years old it doesn't mean you quit being in a band. I bet Coldplay keep going when they realize they won't make as much moneyThis Message Edited On 11.20.08

Agreed. For the first time, they capture and keep my attention with an album, and then they're debating whether to break up? What's up with that?

And there a lot of popular bands that stay up well beyond their 30's making awesome music. Heck, some bands don't START making awesome music until their 30's...This Message Edited On 11.20.08

"Viva La Vida" is an awesome album when compared to other band's music. It's fun, it's catchy, it goes through a wide range of emotions, and the musicianship on it is rather good. It had flow, it had coherency, and there were moments that really just made me stop and listen. None of the other albums by them that I've heard had all of that, and it's sad to me that when Coldplay finally becomes interesting, they decide to break up.

I agree with Pigmi: I'd be much happier if this were Nickelback or Seether or Stain'd or Theory of a Deadman or Three Doors Down.

Or Converge. I really can't stand Converge ( < ---- it's true, but I said it to emphasize a point).This Message Edited On 11.20.08

Are you actually kidding me on? if any band should break up, it's Oasis so that I don't have to be subjected to their recycled crap that they call "new" albums. Oasis were barely relative at the time, never mind now.

I really hope they don't break up, Viva was woeful, but I quite like everything else

This is pretty good news for me. They've released way too much of the same material over the years.
My friend Jack thinks Coldplay are the best band in the world. He also pretends to be manically depressed over msn and then is the happiest, cockiest person in the world when you meet him...
I think every Coldplay CD should have a warning label on the back:

It seems people have failed to realise that the bands that are actually still going at age 50/60 are generally shit now... Going out with a pathetic whimper and an extra few million in the pocket... Yeah... That's dignified...

So people shouldn't criticise Coldplay for "Having so much money that they can't be fucked to continue"

I wish people would stop comparing them to Radiohead too... I know it's an old argument and I should shut up, but really, are there any Radiohead songs that sound like "Life In Technicolor"? Stop basing all your musical likes and dislikes on what's cool and uncool to listen to... I know you haters have a secret Coldplay song you love

So, no, disbanding wouldn't be a good move

Spamue1G

^ Yes, there are quite a few Radiohead songs that sound like Life In Technicolor. In fact, Viva La Vida was probably the most Radiohead-like album yet to be completely honest (which is obviously why it's the best).

I really don't understand how everyone can bash this band.

Like sure, Chris Martin has ego issues, and personally i found X&Y a tad bit over the top. But still all their songs are incredibly amazing. Like wow people...lol.

People will have their opinions but i dont understand the deep hatred for coldplay music: like it's not that bad. This Message Edited On 11.20.08

If they broke up, Chris would probably start a solo career as he the reason the majority of fans listen to them for his voice.

Coldplay arn't that depressing, they're quite a good band, nothing original though. They're like 3rd or 4th wave at doing what they're doing, so they seem diluted compared to artists that were doing it before them.

also.. 33 isn't too old to keep playing the type of music they do. they should evolve rather than split up, tbh. This Message Edited On 11.20.08

To be honest, its a pretty clever ploy. They'll all probably form other bands afterwards, just they've felt Coldplay can't get much bigger than it already is, so its best to set it rest before its starts to fall off its perch.

I actually don't mind Coldplay at all, even though they are Radiohead rip-offs, I think quite a lot of you are just saying you hate them because you're embarassed to be even indifferent to them ;-)

As someone who mostly listens to heavy / progressive bands they're quite nice to listen to when you're in a relaxed mood

Although I still hope they split up...
