Cuban Punk Rocker Spared Jail 2008-08-30 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 9 Comments | A Cuban punk rocker has escaped a potential four-year prison sentence, having been cleared of the controversial "social dangerousness" charge.
Gorki Aguila, who fronts the band Porno Para Ricardo, has been fiercely critical of the nation's communist government in the past, speaking out against the restriction of personal freedoms and directly criticising iconic leader Fidel Castro and current President Raul Castro.
The contentious "social dangerousness" law allows authorities to jail anybody they believe could be about to commit a crime for up to four years.
Aguila is convinced that the foreign media attention which surrounded the trial was crucial to the prosecution's decision to drop the charge prior to the trial. He also vowed to continue criticising Cuba's government.
He was instead found guilty of playing his music too loud when recording the band's new album and was fined around US$30.
