UMG Censors Be Your Own Pet CD 2008-03-24 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 11 Comments | Nashville punk rockers Be Your Own Pet may be regretting their association with Universal Music Group, after the label cut three tracks from the the US release of second album Get Awkward as they were deemed to be "too violent."
Universal- also home to Eminem, Marilyn Manson and 50 Cent- cut a distribution deal with Be Your Own Pet's indie home Ecstatic Peace Records and Be Your Own Pet took advantage of UMG's superior resources to secure a wider release for Get Awkward.
However despite appearing on the European release, distributed by Britain's XL Recordings, 'Becky,' 'Blow Yr Mind' and 'Black Hole' are all curiously absent from the US retail edition, having been pulled from the tracklist less than a month before its release on March 11.
Ecstatic Peace general manager Andre Kesin told Pitchfork: "This is not indicative of how we've operated with Universal. They've never said a word about anything we've ever done before. This took us all by surprise."
Singer Jemima Pearl echoed those sentiments in an interview with New York University's Washington Square News: "There's no one you can talk to to try to argue your case. Other than that, Universal has been great. But I guess that's just what happens when you decide to have something to do with a major label. They're going to be scared of anything that's not completely cookie cutter."
Plans are currently underway to issue the three as an EP in the US under XL Recordings.

How can Be Your Own Pet lyrics be violent?
| | | because Universal is a gay label
| | | A record label with Eminem and Marilyn Manson is cutting bad lyrical content - now?
| | | This is almost as hilarious as when Nirvana's In Utero was censored because of fetuses.
| | | Except that wasn't hilarious.
| | | Does anyone know what this lyrical content was exactly?
| | | this smacks of a publicity stunt. look at the lyrics in those links that planewreck posted - not a patch on the offensiveness/violence of the other universal acts listed in the article (who DIDN'T GET CENSORED).
now, more people have heard that the band have a new album out, and all their fans will now buy both the album AND the EP, thus increasing record sales and revenue.
bastards.

| | | Lol. be your own P**
| | | "Becky" is kinda bad, but censor-worthy? Not really. I've heard worse on my radio.
