Hansard And Irglova Pick Up Oscar 2008-02-25 by Dave de Sylvia EMERITUS | 5 Comments | The Frames' Glen Hansard and partner Marketa Irglova took home the award for Best Original Song at last night's Academy Awards in Los Angeles, for their composition 'Falling Slowly.'
Taken from the former Frames bassist John Carney's film Once, an indie musical about a pair of would-be lovers- one a native Dubliner, played by Hansard, and the other a Czech immigrant, played by Irglova- in Dublin's city centre, 'Falling Slowly' beat out competition from Enchanted and August Rush to win the prestigious award.
The legitimacy of the song's nomination was called into question last month, when organisers became aware of its previous life, having been featured on The Frames' album The Cost, Hansard and Irglova's collaborative album The Swell Season and the soundtrack to Czech movie Beauty In Trouble, however they were satisfied that it had been composed originally for inclusion in Once.
Said Hansard upon receipt of the award: “Thanks! This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It’s been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who’ve helped us, they know who they are, we don’t need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks.”
Irglova was cut off before she could finish her acceptance speech, however host and serial sweetie pie Jon Stewart invited her back up on stage following the commercial break to say her piece.

Awesome, this was a really good movie.
| | | Yeah, it was really nice that they let her back up. Too bad not many of people here seem to have seen this movie, much less heard the song. This Message Edited On 02.25.08
| | | I loved the movie and love all of their work. I'm glad that they won because they were the only performers who also wrote the song they performed.
| | | Probably the best part of the whole thing besides the Coens winning three statues.
| | | Oh come on, copyright violation? BS.
I think my mom taped it though.
Once is an absolutely fantastic movie.
