RIP Cronos 2026-10-01 by John Marinakis CONTRIBUTOR | 19 Comments | Conrad "Cronos" Lant, the vocalist and bassist of British metal pioneers Venom, has died at the age of 63. The band announced his passing on October 1. No cause of death has been disclosed.
In a statement shared through their social media channels, Venom remembered Lant's central role in shaping the band's music and thanked the fans who supported him throughout his career. His son Nathan also expressed his gratitude, saying: "The legend of Cronos will never die."
Alongside guitarist Jeff "Mantas" Dunn and drummer Anthony "Abaddon" Bray, Cronos helped establish a blueprint for extreme metal through Venom's early recordings. Their 1981 debut, Welcome to Hell, and 1982's Black Metal combined raw aggression, speed and satanic imagery, influencing generations of thrash, death and black metal musicians. The latter album also gave black metal its name.
Despite periods away from the group and numerous lineup changes, Cronos remained Venom's defining voice. Since 2009, he had performed alongside guitarist Stuart "Rage" Dixon and drummer Danny "Danté" Needham. Their latest album, Into Oblivion, was released earlier this year.
