Gang of Youths have announced their return with a brand new single, Things Take Time, which was released digitally on August 18 through Sony Australia/RCA/Arista. Self-produced by the band, the track marks their first major original release since 2022's acclaimed full-length angel in realtime. and was recently previewed during their multi-night residency at the Sydney Opera House.
Frontman David Le'aupepe wanted the band to step away from the heavy weight of their previous work, aiming instead to make a song that feels speedy, light, and groovy. Its lyrics address the cyclical nature of life, meditating on patience, transformation, and the endless loop of birth, growth, death, and rebirth that encases all matter and energy.
The release is a decidedly jaunty and upbeat number inspired by the simple act of gardening. Le'aupepe noted that observing his wife cultivating tomatoes and seeing the thriving garden at bandmate Tom Hobden’s home studio fascinated him with the cycle of growth. The track leans into a softer, almost yacht-rock-inspired side of the group's sound, teasing out fresh dimensions through lush orchestral accompaniment featuring strings and horns.
