New Deftones in 2008

According to http://www.ultimate-guitar.com:

Quote:
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has told MTV.com that the group's fans can expect the follow-up to 2006's "Saturday Night Wrist" to be on store shelves by fall 2008. According to Moreno, the band has spent about six weeks writing for it and wants to spend the next three coming up with even more material.

"The band's been working really good together and utilizing our time really well," he said. "We have a little more than half an album's worth of material right now — written completely. We plan to have a record's worth of material written before the holidays, and we'll start recording at the beginning of next year.

"The last two records have been a lot more impersonal," Moreno continued. "Once we started using computers, it got super impersonal. Everybody would come in separately and do their parts. We looked back to our sophomore album, where we wrote and recorded it and mixed it in four months, and that's still one of my favorite records we've ever done. We want to work in that way [again], all together in one room, and we just play everything until it's memorized, and then we'll record it live. That's what we did with our first records."

Moreno said he won't be contributing guitars to the yet-untitled LP, and he feels that aids the creative process. "[Guitarist] Stephen [Carpenter] has been writing tons of songs, and he's got some really great ideas," Moreno said. "I don't think I'm slowing things down by trying to change everything in the midst of writing it — I am letting them write the music, and I'll take care of the vocals."

The singer said the material the band has come up with so far is "dance-y" and "way uptempo-ish, which is kind of neat."

"[Drummer] Abe [Cunningham] is playing really, really fast, and I like that," Moreno said. "It's way more energetic. Our last couple of records have been more midtempo, which is the stuff I tend to write. But on this record, everything is more snappy."

This is old news excepting the stuff about it being uptempo. I don't want Chino to lay out in composition. He's the factor that yields balance in the group. If left to their own devises Carpenter would write a CD of "Elite"s and "Koreas" and Chino would write an album of "Teenager"s and "Digital Bath"s. The combination of the two is what yields the genius of Deftones.

Hey, have some faith in Carpenter. He's responsible for stuff like Be Quiet and Drive, Dai the Flu, Knife Party, Mascara...I think it's going to be cool to see Deftones go a bit old school again.

Plus, with the rhythm section of Abe and Chi that just keeps getting exponentially better with each album backing him, they should make out alright.

And besides, Chino's vocals were always a huge part of Deftones' character anyway. It excites me to hear that Carpenter is writing songs and that the band is going to record live again. This Message Edited On 10.31.07

I really doubt it will be as good as White Pony.

I agree with DFelon though I do look forward to the release.

I hope it's more cohesive as compared to Saturday Night Wrist. It was fantastic but was ALL over the place in direction. The bits like Riviere and the instrumental should be expanded on. Those songs were the best on the album.

yupyup. Listening to Cherry Waves right now, that song (among other, better songs) proves this point.

Well, from the way he's talking, it may be more similar to Adrenaline or Around the Fur. I really hope this is true. I really don't like post-White Pony Deftones.

No matter what sort of album the Deftones come up with, you know it will be creative. That's the one thing about this band this keeps me coming back.
