Oceansize Go To The Zoo

2025-10-16 by ShadowOfTheCitadel | 24 Comments
Some distant planet that means something mystic must be in retrograde somewhere, because legendary progressive rock band Oceansize has stepped back into the light with new offerings! Er, well, SORT OF new offerings.

It's the 15th anniversary of Oceansize's final album Self-Preserved While The Bodies Float Up this year, and due to hold ups with their label and other music biz related roadblocks, the album has long been out of print and unavailable on most streaming services.

It looks like these roadblocks have been circumnavigated, because the band has re-released their swan song back on triple vinyl as well as made it available on your favorite streaming service.

To celebrate this momentous occasion, the package also contains bonus tracks. One of these tracks, "Cloak", was available on a few releases of this album when it released - but there are other new ones as well that were unused instrumentals.

Why does this matter? Because lead vocalist Mike Vennart, praise be upon him, has saw fit to actually add vocal tracks to these unused songs - effectively making these new complete Oceansize tunes in the year of 2025.

You can listen to the new "single"(?) that has been released, "To The Zoo", on YouTube.

I guess I should check this band some day for some reason I've known of them for a long time but just never bothered

Oh shit I'd never guess I will hear a "new" Oceansize tune. My friend was at one of their last shows in 2011, I discovered them like 10 years after the breakup. Song is fire of course.

Anyways, Mike also continues to deliver very quality stuff under his Vennart project, at least his last two records have a huge Oceansize vibe to them.

Man, I miss this band so much. No one sounds like them. I'm thankful for these new tracks though.

Very happy news here. This band is so nostalgic for me.

Now if they'd just come back together and make something great...

Excellent writeup @ShadowoftheCitadel!

Honestly you never know with the reunion, i feel like eveyone and Mike especially has calmed down their negative sentiments, maybe it will happen.

This band made some truly amazing music but yeah on that last album you could tell they were spinning wheels just ever so slightly. Nice that Mike did quite a lot with his solo stuff though, that always made me feel they were around in spirit.

I own all of their LPs and I had forgotten that this band exists. And how good they were. Maybe I should dig those records out of my archive and put them into my library...

So what y'all saying regarding the remaster? The original had excellent dynamic range, so idk what there was to improve

Would be nice if Oceansize did a Sikth and came back part time on their own terms. Doubt it though, as nothing in the music scene suggests they would come back any bigger than before, and they still might not be able to overcome differences, who knows. That he's working on anything to do with OS is a sign there is an emotional shift.

Agreed. I also said something similar in the oceansize threads, I think the overall sentiments have grown rather positive over the last few years
