Allegaeon announce new LP 2025-02-14 by Toondude | 8 Comments | American tech death metal group Allegaeon have officially announced their latest album, entitled The Ossuary Lens, is scheduled to drop on April 4th. The new record is the band's first album with returning original vocalist, Ezra Haynes, who replaced Riley McShane back in 2022 shortly after the release of their previous record Damnum.
Along with the announcement, the band also dropped the lead single from the album, "Driftwood". The song features clean vocals from Ezra, which were not present in his previous work with the band.

I think Ezra's cleans are a little commonplace, but overall I'm glad his harsh vocals are back. He's got a much deeper delivery than Riley, and it fits the band a bit better.
As for the song, it seems alright. Seems a bit more straightforward than Damnum, which I'm a little bummed about, but it's not bad. Just a little typical, I suppose.
| | | I'm a huge Allegaeon fan and I dig Ezra's harsh vocals. I'm alarmed by the addition of the generic 2010 metalcore-sounding cleans. I loved Riley's cleans and felt like they were used in cool ways that enhanced songs (see "Called Home" from Damnum). This first single sounds like a track from Formshifter that they decided to arbitrarily jam minimally competent cleans into. I'm really hoping that's not a recurring theme on the upcoming album.

| | | yeah the cleans are...fine I guess? Pretty generic 2010s-core sorta style but at least they're done well. The song is killer otherwise so I'm excited to hear what's next.

leaning too far into meloldeaf this time around
hopefully the rest of the stuff is better
| | | "minimally competent cleans" lol.
It's a bit harsh maybe, but yeah they're definitely a step down from Riley's cleans which were honestly excellent. That said I think I prefer Ezra's harsh vocals over Riley's.
Overall, I enjoy the vocals (even the cleans) and there's some great riffs here too. Looking forward to the new release.
| | | They're cooked if these "this is the chorus bro!" cleans are on the majority of the tracks.
