Wow. I don’t really keep up with the band, but did not see this coming
|
| |
Excellent news
|
| |
LFG
|
| |
My Dream Theater phase pretty much ended with MP's departure. However, cannot say I am not stocked to see what comes next. Even with Mangini's incredible talent and 5 albums later, I always felt the band lacked something after MP left.
|
| |
Awesome news, but feel bad for Mike (Mangini). Great drummer. Having him unceremoniously replaced like that reminds me of when RHCP just instantly ejected Josh when John wanted to come back
|
| |
PORTNOY STANS ASSEMBLE
|
| |
"Awesome news, but feel bad for Mike (Mangini). Great drummer. Having him unceremoniously replaced like that reminds me of when RHCP just instantly ejected Josh when John wanted to come back"
yeah tho i think mangini had to have seen this coming to some extent. especially with portnoy playing on petrucci's solo album and then lte reuniting. hell, i saw DT in philly this year and portnoy was in the crowd. it almost seems obvious this was gonna happen in hindsight
|
| |
Not something I was expecting in the least. Mangini is an amazing drummer and contributed to some of my favorite DT songs to date but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited to see what Portnoy and the boys will cook up next.
|
| |
Who gives a shit this band has always sucked ahrd.
|
| |
>hell, i saw DT in philly this year and portnoy was in the crowd.
Mike in the background at the DT show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5yuAK8gFN3g
|
| |
Great news, interesting to see what they come up with
|
| |
Holy shit I did not see this coming. Never expected them to actually replace Mangini. Get's me pretty excited for the live shows at least.
|
| |
I legitimately thought this would never happen.
|
| |
“I legitimately thought this would never happen.” (2)
Seriously, even with MP’s recent camaraderie and collaborations with other DT members, I don’t think anyone could have seriously predicted this to happen.
Moreso than Portnoy’s drumming, at the very least I hope this marks the return of a more organic sound and creative risks for the band. I’ll now be spending the next week or so equally baffled and excited
|
| |
don't really listen to this band too much these days, and while Mangini is obviously an incredible drummer and worked well with DT, to me it always felt like there was something inscrutable that was missing.
hearing Portnoy drum on Petrucci's latest solo album made me understand. they just have some magic chemistry or bond there that is impossible to replicate.
|
| |
Wow, I never figured we'd see the day. It makes me excited to hear a new DT album for the first time in a while. Only thing they need to do now is replace Labrie and we'll be good to go.
|
| |
This post is so cheesy good lord this band blowz so ahrd.
|
| |
"Dream Theater back to Mike Portnoy" is the correct headline...
|
| |
Exciting news!!!

Completely agree with all of this
|
| |
Mike Porntoy
|
| |
I can only repeat what others said: Mangini is an incredible drummer and some of the stuff he made with DT are a pleasant listen, but they always kidna lacked that special spark that they had with Porntoy. Granted I don't know if DT can still twist and turn their signature style in a way that would feel fresh, but I'm still stocked what they can do in a new album.
|
| |
It was a somewhat plausible outcome since Petrucci and Portnoy had already started playing together again
|
| |
Band never had a spark agreed Chaotic.
|
| |
Mike Portnoy gives me big Jerry Garcia vibes aesthetically
|
| |
I had to check the date after seeing this news post in case today's April 1st
|
| |
oh thank god
|
| |
same tho, also checked to make sure their facebook page wasn't some sponsored metal meme page or something lol because the pic that came with the update looks like it was editted by someone who just discovered MS paint https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=882804879878046&set=a.268057114686162
|
| |
Yea, I was expecting this to be a hoax at first.
I wonder how their material will sound with Portnoy back. James' voice is still gonna suck, but maybe well get some juicy Portnoy growls again :D
|
| |
whoa crazy
|
| |
Mike Shitnoy
|
| |
Checked the date several times. Mangini is so likeable that I feel mixed about his departure, but it is exciting to see what they might come up with next.
|
| |
Soldier on, Hawks, maybe someone will take the bait. Was one of my favourite bands till mid nineties.
|
| |
I don't think it's bait. There is joy in dumb in shitposting
|
| |
the creative juices are low in the shitposting world today it seems
|
| |
Yeah no bait to be taken. Just shit posting a shit band. M///

Nowhere.

Start by asking the one key question: Do I really have to?
|
| |
you don't
|
| |
Happy for Mike.
|
| |
Images and Words. If that's too bright sounding, Awake. If you need more wank, Scenes From A Memory. These are the classics
|
| |
This is awesome
|
| |
Band has no classics or even any remotely decent albums agreed Kalk!
|
| |
Mmmm such a good band gimme more DT
|
| |
bruh what a shitty way to treat Mangini
This is in no way going to help Dream Theater - their biggest issue for years has bee LaBrie's awful awful voice
|
| |
"Mmmm such a good band gimme more DT"
Mods plz ban we can't have these people openly flaunting their god awful taste.
|
| |
"This is in no way going to help Dream Theater - their biggest issue for years has bee LaBrie's awful awful voice"
hmm idk since portnoy left i feel like their songwriting dipped pretty dramatically and their music took a kind of mechanical turn. production also fell off a cliff for the most part. portnoy was supposedly a big contributor to both those things when he was a member.
labrie's vocals are fine on the newer studio albums. its when he tries to sing the old stuff live he sounds awful really.
|
| |
I kind of checked out of Dream Theater around after Portnoy left. Not because their material after that was lackluster or anything, it was just timing in life and I was checking out other bands/genres/etc. I'll definitely check out whatever new material they have planned now though, but to be fair, I'll also check out the stuff I missed the past 10ish years to see if anything hooks me. "Scenes from a Memory" is easily one of my favorite albums ever.
|
| |
He left?
|
| |
to join avenged sevenfold yes... or so he thought
|
| |
This is in no way going to help Dream Theater - their biggest issue for years has bee LaBrie's awful awful voice [2]
We need more of those nasty Portnoy growls
|
| |
yeah throw Tom from Evergrey in the band and I'll listen to their next album
|
| |
Hopefully this leads to some better material
|
| |
Mike Shitnoy got me
|
| |
damn was actually rewatching those audition vids they did years for all the different drummers and getting all nostalgic, legit never thought this would happen so wow
|
| |
Mike Shitnoy [2]
|
| |
took them long enough, they've been on good terms with Portnoy for years...
|
| |
to join avenged sevenfold yes... or so he thought
And the album he did over there was dope.
|
| |
Tundra has been jerking off 7 times a day for the past decade just hoping for this.
|
| |
These guys were boring as fuck with Mike Mangini. He might be a good drummer, but his playing is so damn bland. He's the Shawn Drover of Prog.
|
| |
Mike Gaypornoy sure knows how to drum but no drummer is enough to make these guys not boring. Cmon now, the main man is named after a mediocre cheese. Can't say they didn't warn you.
|
| |
LaBrie as main man? Idk, Petrucci and Rudess and Portnoy have bigger egos, even though LaBrie isn't exactly non pretentious
|
| |
LaBrie looks like a biker dad but sounds like fucking brett manning when he sings
|
| |
LaBrie is the weakest link, no doubt. They should fire him and get Ray Alder now that he doesn't have a main band.
|
| |
"LaBrie looks like a biker dad but sounds like fucking brett manning when he sings"
or Richard Simmons lmao
|
| |
Quit it with all the Labrie hate boys…..we wouldn’t have DT any other way
|
| |
back when I was 15 and only knew like 3 other bands I was heartbroken by the news of Mike leaving DT, so this is kinda cool to see
|
| |
It was wild how he left for A7X and the they kicked him out.
|
| |
Tell me these guys aren’t wife-swapping swingers. 100% that’s how this arrangement was hashed out.
|
| |
I wouldn’t bet against that actually
|
| |
I wonder if they swapped James Labrie with Lebron James would anyone notice

Dream Theater stopped being relevant sometime in the mid aughts, so this news is merely a bleep disrupting progressive metal's radio silence.
|
| |
YESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYESYES!!!
|
| |
@Voivod: They've definitely lost some of their flair since losing Portnoy, but within the realm of traditional prog, I'd say they're as relevant as ever... especially as the number of quality representatives continues to dwindle.
|
| |
^^I don't know, to my ears, thy are going through the motions for some time now… And yeah, they are household name for traditional progressive rock/metal, but their 1992-2000 output remains unmatched by their newer albums.
|
| |
...but their 1992-2000 output remains unmatched by their newer albums.--
No doubt. Kevin Moore kept them grounded, and if they had let his Chroma Key / OSI influences shine through, I think they could have been on another level. Instead they became Liquid Tension Experiment with a vocalist (not that those albums were bad in the beginning).
|
| |
-- Instead they became Liquid Tension Experiment with a vocalist
This. Jams for the sake of jams.
|
| |
Exactly, although I am a fan of Metropolis 2 and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. After that, they kind of lost their way.
Edit: I'm talking shit about the Mangini albums (here or one of the DT threads) but I forgot about Distance Over Time. That one was actually good.
|
| |
^^I like Train of Thought too, but with Octavarium and its successors, something just wasn't the "same", that's totally subjective though.
|
| |
Great news. I've huge expectations about that. Portnoy always was one of my favourite drummers and I also always saw him as a great person and a great prog fan and musician.
|
| |
"Hawks needs to get a life lol."
Awwwwww are you upset cause you were jerking off to Mike Shitnoy's pic at the exact moment you saw my comments and it got you in your feelings????

I love Dream Theater, but some of these comments are great. Mike Shitnoy lol

I wonder if they ever clowned Mike and his last name.
Mike's got a Mangina
|

Mike Mangina vs. Mike Shitnoy
WHO COMES OUT ON TOP? FIND OUT THIS WEEK ON SMACKDOWN!
|
| |
"Awesome news, but feel bad for Mike (Mangini). Great drummer. Having him unceremoniously replaced like that reminds me of when RHCP just instantly ejected Josh when John wanted to come back"
Yeah...this isn't like that at all. Petrucci said no to Portnoy for a literal decade in order to do right by Mangini, and severely damaged his relationship with Portnoy in the process. I'm sure Mangini isn't over the moon about this, but it's not like he got blindsided or stabbed in the back.
|
| |
I dunno man, it seems like Portnoy was the influence responsible for a lot of what I didn't enjoy about the period from Six Degrees to Black Clouds. Not that I dislike Portnoy at all (I've met him and he's super friendly and seems to actually love his fans) but they were growing stale, so ADTOE and S/T felt like breaths of fresh air to me. Now that they've once again grown stale, I'm hoping that he brings some energy back to the proceedings, but I do prefer their current sound to the 2000s sound so I hope they don't try to pick up where they left off when he left. I guess we'll see.
|
| |
Might be interesting to see what Mike does with Mike's parts in live videos. A shame we have to suffer through LaBrie though

I was honestly surprised when I first watched a video of dream theater live like a month or two ago and first saw what Labrie looked like. I fully expected to see Brett Manning with that kind of voice, not even kidding. Meanwhile, gruff and tuff biker dad. Probably haven't seen a bigger dissonance between appearance and voice in my entire life
