Green Day's "Dookie" turns 30

2023-08-18 by Sarah | 48 Comments
Green Day have announced a 30-year anniversary edition of their breakthrough album Dookie to be released on September 29th. As a sneak peek, they also dropped ten demos from the album, including the weirdest version of "Basket Case" you will ever hear.

"Sometimes you take a gamble and luck's on your side. Back in the summer of '93 Green Day went into the studio to record Dookie and had no idea what their destiny would be. They were young, rebellious, and absolutely scared shitless. There was no telling if they were about to prove everyone wrong or make the biggest mistake of their lives.

This year Dookie turns 30 and they’ve cracked open the vaults putting together an epic 30th Anniversary Super Deluxe version of the album that will be available as a 6-LP vinyl, 4-CD box set and up everywhere digitally September 29th".

You can pre-order it here: http://GreenDay.lnk.to/dookie. You can listen to the previously unreleased demos here: https://greenday.lnk.to/Dookie4TrackDemos

Bought it on tape when it came out, very exciting and fresh but bearing in mind I was 13/14 at the time I found it very childish.

Even then I remember thinking ‘this clearly isn’t punk, the yanks haven’t a clue’

It was ‘sold’ as punk isn’t dead and that the band was proper ‘punk’ but I was having none of it.

Along came all that skate punk nonsense as well which don’t get me wrong at 14yrs old had its moments but it became ridiculously stale after 5mins.

This album is great though. An absolute classic when I was at school and it has aged well. Longview is still an absolute belter.

Ive said it before but it's amazing how 30 short years can make everyone forget that when green day and blink 182 and NOFX and the offspring came out the punks were all in agreement that they were poser sellout music for babies with no credibility whatsoever

Blink 182 were another level of infantile dross.

Slippery slope that started with the mass appeal of these bell ends.

Listening to these demos is fascinating.
Hearing the piano ballad “when it’s time” in particular because I always assumed all the softer stuff was a product of the American Idiot era yet it’s clear they were toying with ideas well outside of “pop punk” years and years before they actually released to the public.

“Dookie to be released on September 29th.”

Close to the end of the month, I see… around the time the guy singing usually expects to be woken up.
