Haken release Taurus

2023-01-18 by Fernando Alves STAFF | 10 Comments
Progressive heavy rockers Haken released the third single, 'Taurus', from their seventh studio album Fauna, due out March 3rd via InsideOut Music. The music video, produced by Crystal Spotlight, can be seen below.

Directed by Miles Skarin

Ross Jennings on the song: "The song's lyrics were written roughly at the same time we all started hearing about the devastation and crisis happening in Ukraine. I was already writing the piece based on the annual migration of the wildebeests with strong references to people travelling in herds and strength in numbers. Suddenly I realised I had an anchor for what the song could be about and knowing this gives it all the more emotional weight; We’re all on some sort of journey towards salvation or enlightenment. Sometimes out of choice or not, we need to leave the past behind us and make new beginnings. We only have each other, and belief and hope are our strongest allies.”

Tracklist:
1. Taurus
2. Nightingale
3. The Alphabet Of Me
4. Sempiternal Beings
5. Beneath The White Rainbow

I'm gonna be brutally honest here: These vocals did add absolutely nothing to the song for me.
They work during the chorus, but Ross is forcing his tone so much in the rest of this song. Feels like LaBrie or even Einar could shine in some of these moments. Idk, vocals make this song feel very unnatural to me, intrumentals are pretty cool.

This song won me over by the end, but I have to agree Ross's vocals aren't grabbing me, and it's most noticeable on this single. I think he's become a better/more confident singer, but also more safe - I feel like he had a more expressive approach on past albums (like The Mountain)

The instrumental is of course superb though, and the band still gels together quite nice. I think this will be one of their better albums overall

Probably my favourite single they've released so far, very reminiscent of Virus/Vector material.
