New Kendrick Lamar Single

2022-05-10 by Brendan Schroer EMERITUS | 42 Comments
American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar has released a promotional single for his upcoming record Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, titled "The Heart Part 5"; as the name suggests, the track is the fifth in a song series that dates back to 2010. Stylistically, "The Heart Part 5" harks back to K.Dot's 2015 album To Pimp a Butterfly with its sociopolitically conscious lyrics and prominent jazz and soul influences. Additionally, the tune samples Marvin Gaye's disco-influenced 70s hit "I Want You", for which Gaye's songwriters received posthumous songwriting credits.

Check out the video below to listen to the new song:

Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers will be released on 13 May. The release announcement came in the form of a response to a fan on Twitter who simply wrote: "Kendrick Lamar is officially retired". The rapper shot back with the announcement and release date of the new record, shocking both the Twitter user and the music blogosphere at large.

I know the song's already been getting talked about on the album threads, but I figured I'd create a dedicated thread to discuss it :]

the track is a lot of fun with Ken's usual sharp lyricism, but some of the vocal mixing was a bit off.

This song is just addictive. So much lyrical meat to pick apart, over analyze, and study. Kendrick really hasn't missed a beat in those five years. Hyped.

“I have a feeling this will be one of the least impressive songs on this release.”

Probably won’t be on the release. The Heart is typically an expression of his mindset before a release. That being said, an interpolation of the beat could still happen, as Heart pt. 4 had a snippet of the beat from FEAR as well as the high-pitched echoed vox from PRIDE. Maybe the beat from 5 will be on the album but I doubt it, probably more of a hint at the overall sound of the record. Maybe he’s saying this’ll be his “What’s Going On”.

It's fine, people will be hype cuz its Kendrick but the heart has always been its own thing from his albums anyway. It's undeniably his style though.

I love the song and vid as a concept, together. Just as a track, as much as I appreciate the Gaye sample, his flow has sort of an awkward groove on top of the instrumental and doesn’t really try to fit with the rest of the music. I can’t help but wonder if more could have been done between the production and the vocals to make it gel better. Most people seem impressed enough though. Not up there with the best Kendrick tracks, but a welcome departure from a lot of what was going on on DAMN.

Yeah, I think the disconnect is part of the point...even the way he breathes at a different tempo when the drums drop out - really cool track, looking forward to it not being on the album

"his flow has sort of an awkward groove on top of the instrumental and doesn’t really try to fit with the rest of the music"

this is my only criticism and surprised this is the first time I've seen anyone on the internet mention it lol. tbf, in the past he has mixed this rapping style with more traditional flow so I'm hoping that will still be the case. I can't imagine performing this song live, how would you ever make sure you're rapping at the right pace??

pretty weak track tbh. in any case its good he's off that DAMN shit and back on the jazz train.

the track feels so direct lyrically, like Kendrick is really just speaking his mind and addressing his fans directly, rather than trying to portray characters or weave some kind of narrative, so I think this disconnect people are talking about actually suits the track well
