Prog is garbage

Rina Sawayama, who recently sprung to international fame off the back of a Charli XCX tweet teasing a writing collaboration[1], has dropped hot goss at the 2021 Brit Awards.

In an interview with the NME, Sawayama revealed that she was in the process of writing a follow-up to her 2020 ultrapiece Sawayama. When asked to comment on the stylistic direction of her upcoming material, she responded:

I've been listening to a lot of garbage...so, like, prog rock, like grunge [...], 2000's britpop

And there we have it.

Also notable is the point 3:16 into the interview at which Mr. NME mispronounces the first syllable of Sawayama's last name (Sawayama). The final three syllables were correct. Sawayama's name was afforded a difficulty of 20% on the acclaimed website www.howtopronounce.com/, which means that with a fail quotient of 25%, the NME are doing slightly worse than average. Some things will never change.

Sawayama's attendance at the Brits was the fruit of a successful campaign for a change of eligibility criteria, a reaction against her previous exclusion on the grounds of her Japanese nationality. She was nominated for the Rising Star category. Here is an adequate summary of her idiosyncrasies as an artist and the future of prog rock:

Why is the Staff writing troll news articles now

Her real quote in case anyone actually cares:

“I’ve been listening to a lot of Garbage [as in the band], prog rock, grunge, a lot early ’00s Britpop, ‘Sound Of The Underground’ by Girls Aloud, a lot of the Xenomania stuff, and even ’90s rave as well. Plus garage and stadium rock – everything!”

The National are so much better than all the other white indie rock bands that it's not even
funny. I used to dismiss them as another overhyped pitchfork band, but once I listened to them more I realised how great they are. Unlike basically every other indie rock band that made great debut and then kept getting mediocre, they released a mediocre debut and kept improving, though their last album sounded a bit stale. There are however other reasons why they beat almost every band at their game. Matt Berninger's baritone vocals are awesome. They are a breath of fresh air compared to all those whiny voices in your typical indie band. He even sounds good when he gets drunk at every live show.

To me, Tool's Lateralus is the most amazing piece of music ever composed. I think Tool deliberately wanted to give their fans something truly amazing, but wanted them to find it on their own. "Recognize this as a holy gift..." At first, I thought that the song Lateralus was about tripping acid - discovering true color by seperating the body from the mind. At first listen, I imagined the bending envelope as an intense visual. After becoming more familiar with the track, however, I had reformed my interpretation to something broader: think deeper. Lateralus, perhaps because it is the album's "title track", serves as the central clue for a puzzle that a friend of mine had read about somewhere on the internet. "All I know is that there is a different order for the songs - something about two spirals. Oh yeah, and thirteen is in the middle." After scavenging through endless google search results, I gave up on finding more about this 'alternate order'. Intent to figure the album out, and very curious about the spirals - I put on the proverbial 'thinking cap'. I understood how the spirals could have a lot of significance, in that the album's title track offers the inspiring, "swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human..........And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been. We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been."

Bon Iver is so much better than all the other white indie rock bands that it's not even
funny. I used to dismiss him as another overhyped sad man in a cabin, but once I listened to him more I realised how great he is. Unlike basically every other sad man in a cabin with an acoustic guitar that made great debut and then kept getting mediocre, he released a mediocre debut and kept getting even worse, though his last album sounded a bit okay. There are however other reasons why he beats almost every composer at their game. Bon Iver's OOOOoooOOOOO come for tea vocals are awesome.
