It’s insane and sad what some people involved in the rap industry can get away with. Rap fans often seem to just not care about how awful of a person someone is. It’s one thing to say you don’t care what someone did cause you just like their music, but so many people will go out of their way to defend people who obviously don’t deserve it. Like the Chris Brown and Tory Lanez situations, people covering for Nicki Minaj, and now I’m seeing people defending this guy on r/hiphopheads and shit. It sucks

Because a huge chunk of the appeal in Rap music is how absolutely evil some of the shit is that they say.

Not just evil.. a LOT of respected hip hop and rap has fucking remedial first draft style lyrical content. And for a genre quite focused on lyrics I'm blown away that people dig it FOR the lyrics.

Most of the heavy fans of this music are people who grew up in seriously tough neighborhoods with a "everyman for himself" mentality. It's ingrained in the culture and has been for 30 years. Maybe even more.

I'm not approving of or denying either, I just don't understand how they're related. Seems like one is an excessive portrayal of morals, while the other is an excessive regression. Very different directions.

A surprising amount of rapists claim that they had no idea what they were doing was rape. Maybe every one of them is lying, but in a culture where rough porn is pretty much the norm and where conversations about what consent means aren't all that common, yeah it could conceivably be pretty easy to not recognize when consent is being violated. Doesn't excuse the act itself, a rapist is a rapist, but with some education a lot of people could be prevented from seriously harming someone.

I'm not blaming rape on porn. To reiterate, "a rapist is a rapist" and the responsibility for the act begins and ends with the actor. I am saying that porn does tend to objectify and degrade women, and that if people are having a hard time distinguishing fantasy from reality, there needs to be some education to make the distinction clear in order to confront a culture of toxic masculinity that sees it as just a part of normal sexuality to push boundaries of consent.
