Eddie Van Halen dies at 65

2020-10-07 by Fernando Alves | 67 Comments
Legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen has died of cancer at the age of 65. Eddie's son, Wolfgang Van Halen, announced the news on Twitter.

"I can’t believe I’m having to write this but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning.

He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I’ve shared with him on and off stage was a gift.
My heart is broken and I don’t think I’ll ever fully recover from this loss.

I love you so much, Pop."

Born in 1955, Eddie Van Halen formed Van Halen along with his older brother Alex, bassist Michael Anthony and singer David Lee Roth in 1974. Van Halen is undoubtedly one of the greatest hard-rock bands of the past century as well as one of the best-selling artists of all time, releasing several multi-platinum albums such as Van Halen (1978), Van Halen II (1979), Women and Children First (1980), Fair Warning (1981), Diver Down (1982) or its greatest hit, 1984.

Eddie Van Halen's distinctive and innovative playing technique has earned him the reputation of one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

'Eruption' and 1984's 'Jump' can be streamed below.

On top of being a genre defining guitarist he was such a lovely dude, so humble and down to earth.

I wasn't the biggest Van Halen fan, but fuck man, 65 is way too young to die.

Rest in peace.

So young to pass away. Always seemed like a really cool guy and he was an amazing all around guitarist in every respect. His legacy and contributions to music will live forever. RIP

Damn, this shit really hurts to see. Van Halen was the first band I ever got into, so this dude's impact on not only my musical taste, but my adolescence is immeasurable. The guitar gods are bringing one back home today.

Riff in Peace, Eddie.

Couldn't imagine how hard it must be for Wolfgang, losing a father must be immensely painful. Eruption was one of those things that became a staple of every budding guitarist. Any young guitarist worth his weight in salt could at least play the tapping section. Nobody could make it sound as good as Eddie though. He was a master. So good that he could play a fucking keyboard and nobody gave a shit, cause he was just that good.

And what a mad genius he was. Not only did he find the time to invent some never-heard-before shit to play, he also went about tinkering with his equipment in ways other people had never thought of while *also* creating his own unique visual calling card with that Frankenstrat paint job.

Dude was a true original in every sense of the word.
