God Is an Astronaut premiere song

God Is an Astronaut have premiered the music video for the title track off their upcoming LP, Epitaph. Due out on April 27, this will be their first album released through Napalm Records.

Regarding the video for 'Epitaph', members Niels and Thorsten Kinsella mentioned:

“We wanted the video to capture the horror, overwhelming grief and the dark reality of an untimely death.

“The video features post mortem photography as it directly reflects the subject matter. This song touches on everything from childhood innocence (vulnerability) to the moment you are given the shocking news, to the aftermath that faces a family over a tragic loss.”

First half was pretty interesting, but it devolved into pretty generic GIAA fare. It's fine, but the band really needs to change up their sound somewhere.

Yes Caspian is one of the most underrated post rock bands and one of my fav bands in general now.

i enjoyed this a lot more than you guys seemed to, sounded a lot more emotional and inspired than anything from the last couple of the albums despite the poor video

They have tons of listeners on Spotify and are big in the scene but around here they just don’t seem to be rated or talked about a whole lot.

post-rock in general isn't talked about much these days

Agreed it deserves more attention. Enjoyed this song by the way, very emotive.

"post-rock in general isn't talked about much these days"

probably because of the years of basically every post-rock band sounding the same. that said, when I'm in the right mood, some good post-rock hits the spot

edit: that includes GIAA, they've written some great tracks in their day

Great song, thanks for posting. It sounds a lot different than the GIAA I've heard, the s/t and All is Violent, but there are several albums in between. I like the atmosphere on this a lot.

"probably because of the years of basically every post-rock band sounding the same."

i've always found this point really trite. not to mention untrue. pretty much every good post-rock band sounds really distinct and unique. hear a GIAA song for 10 seconds and you know it's them. same for jakob, sleepmakeswaves, mono, gy!be, caspian, i could go on for ages.

"hear a GIAA song for 10 seconds and you know it's them."

Partly because they haven't evolved in any meaningful way in about 10 years.

I'm not super familiar with sleepmakeswaves or jakob, I'll go give them a shot. But there are/were also a lot of bands aping the Explosion in the Sky sound that didn't do much to differentiate.

i think that's pretty disingenuous - there's obvious songwriting shifts from album to album. hear a track from any given album and you know which one it's from.

i don't know why this band are treated so harshly. yes, their music is rather simplistically constructed and direct but as far as i'm concerned it hits a specific itch of easy to digest yet not one dimensional music with a great atmosphere that few other post-rock bands can do.

if you want other great post-rock, check out the meniscus album from last year. absolutely fantastic stuff.

Band created arguably one of the best songs ever made and a lot of mediocre shit.

A few lazy comments in here suggesting this sound just like typical GIAA. Delve into the track a little deeper and it becomes clear it's a lot more atmospheric and emotive than previous releases (although Helios/Erebus was great) with much more complimentary production. Stoked for the new album after hearing this.

All Is Violent, Far From Refuge, and the s/t are all you really need.

I'd throw in Age of the Fifth Sun, at least for a couple tracks. Shining Through rules.

The build-up is classic GIAA. I dug the heavy guitars after the build-up quite a bit. The song fizzled out a little fast after the work-up to the heavy guitar bit though. I wish the track kept exploding there instead of dropping back down to pick back up ever so slightly for the conclusion.

the end of the beginning is awesome, and the remastered version of a moment of stillness is great too. i like this band too much.
