New Dimmu Borgir Album

2018-01-26 by manosg EMERITUS | 48 Comments
Norwegian symphonic black metal band Dimmu Borgir will release their upcoming album entitled Eonian, later this year. Their first album since 2010's Abrahadabra is slated for a May 4th release date via Nuclear Blast Records and will consist of 10 tracks. The LP, which also marks the Norwegian's 25th anniversary, is produced by the band and engineered by Jens Bogren.

Guitarist Silenoz says:
“Time, when not approaching it from the construct we're used to can't be defined and thus it is illusory. There's only an 'eternal now', which the album title is already hinting at. When we travel between the worlds seen and unseen, the perception of time ceases to exist, it has no function. Our energy is our torch and our compass when we make rifts and pierce through the veil - when we go beyond.”

Vocalist Shagrath adds:
"Eonian represents the illusion of time, everything that is and always has been. For us, it also marks the 25th anniversary of Dimmu Borgir and the album itself is a tribute to our own history and the Norwegian black metal history."

In addition, on February 23rd, Dimmu Borgir will unveil their first single "Interdimensional Summit", that will be released as a 7'' vinyl EP, providing a first taste of the upcoming album.

question is whether seven-odd years were spent stagnating or recharging. here's hoping it's the latter. something along the lines of Puritanical would be awesome.

About time, idk how the band has survived eight years without new material. Are they really that big that they could basically just tour at this point?

jk these guys have always been more of a Norwegian comedy troupe for me. The makeup, the theatrics -- it's all gut-busting. I can't wait for their next zany output.

The "time is a construct" ploy is super edgy to use as a concept for an album, but I personally enjoy anything Dimmu that doesn't have ICS Vortex's silly sounding clean vocals.

Were they even active? I always assumed that they just kind of....stopped.

Anyways, this is cool news. Might not be a great album, but there should at least be a few good tracks.

To my knowledge they reduced their activity to near-Tool levels aside from the Forces of the Northern Night live album (which is absolutely incredible IMO) which was a couple years ago if I remember correctly.

Abrahadabra is pretty not good but that's it really. They just get a lot of shit from edgelords. Stormblast is still my fav though.

Album title is cool. Much better and more tasteful than the last couple titles.

Last album was all bad songs. Bring back the riffs and cut the symph nonsense to proper levels and there might be a chance of this being passable. Not crossing my fingers tho.

I don't mind super pomp symph, they just need some great metal elements to go w/ ... the idea of super extravagant Dimmu isn't bad, they just need to pull it off more tactfully.

as soon as they started turning down the guitars for bigger symph their songwriting went down too, so i think giving them any excuse to forgo writing a prominent rhythm section is probably a bad idea.

Even though their last two albums were mediocre, I still find myself having a soft spot for this band for some reason. I liked at least three songs off Abrahadabra actually, so I'm naively having high hopes for this next one lol

Don't know, but they clearly ate a lot of shrooms. I don't remember their PR being this trippy before.

the new track sounds very little like Dimmu, more like some generic symptho metal band, the black metal elements are all but gone, what a disappointment

They ripped that initial melody for the orchestral part right from Satyricons “K.I.N.G.”

I have mixed feeling about it. I like some of the parts individually, but not the song as a whole. It being a Dimmu track has me automatically expecting something black metal-ish, but it doesn’t have anything really to distinguish it as BM.
