Carnifex vs Virgin Trains

2017-09-15 by DatsNotDaMetulz | 22 Comments
Carnifex have taken to Twitter to hit out at Virgin Trains, after the British rail company used their music without permission in their latest advertising campaign.

The campaign, which was recently updated during an airing of The Great British Bake Off, compared travelling by Virgin Train, soundtracked by Spandau Ballet, to travelling by car, which the advert compares to the chaos of "thrash metal" (not crediting Carnifex) and showing traffic jams, flat tyres and the advert's protagonist being arrested. The advert has also been shared across Virgin Trains' social media platforms.

The company's PR team were said on Twitter to be unaware themselves of what song was used, however, Carnifex went on to criticize the company for the usage of 2008 track "Answers In Mourning", implying that they are not being paid royalties for the song's usage and attacking the negative portrayal of the (mislabelled) genre. It is expected that Spandau Ballet have indeed been paid royalties for their song. Virgin have yet to respond to these claims, and it is unknown if Carnifex will take action against the company.

That's right, Thrash is so shit that not even Deathcore bands want to be associated with it

Unfortunate timing of the article considering what happened in London.

It's fucked that a company as big as Virgin doesn't understand or follow copyright

Well there is a slim chance (as we haven't heard from them yet) that Victory Records (who released Carnifex's albums in 2008) did agree to license the song out, and being the shitty people they are, didn't tell the band.

virgin trains are actual cunts, which makes it even more embarrassing when they aren't even the worst rail company in the uk

I love how Virgin Trains have once again embraced the stereotype that metal is a fundamentally negative thing in someone's life, as if fundamentalist Christians and people who blame metal for suicides/shootings didn't do that enough already, gj boys.

Also I can confirm that sinternet's statement is true, British rail network is absolutely terrible for the most part.

Didn't Virgin Records release a lot of metal during the 90s and early 00s?

virgin trains aren't too bad from my experience. Cross Country can often be really bad, Southern Rail blows. South West is okay. London Midland likewise.

Southern is objectively the worst rail company in the history of rail travel

I loved travelling by train when I was in Japan but if travelling by car gives me metal, I think I might prefer that now.

Fascinating that a large company would put out an ad without even giving thought to copyright infringement. Didn't even care to investigate whose music it was, evidently.
