TesseracT debut new single

2017-06-23 by Drummerboy123 | 43 Comments
TesseracT have released the single "Smile" from their currently untitled fourth album.
Bassist Amos Williams explains: "We chose this track as although it is part of a greater theme, and is in fact towards the end of a story arc, it stands alone very well. We have a solid idea of where we would like to take this track on the next album as it is in no way finished. It is merely one step in a journey."

Their fourth album has no scheduled release date and is still in the process of being finished but it has been confirmed to be a concept album.

Concept album, eh? I hope it'll be spicier than Polaris

Drums are awful and song is boring.

Listening a second time on headphones now -- very odd production on this WIP. Still think this'll sound better as an easy little breather track when it's not standing on it's own. Anyone else kind of cringing at the lyrics?

Interesting, I thought the drums were the only interesting part of this.

Actually listening to this now. Why do the drums sound fully produced while everything else sounds all washed out? Sounds kinda shitty, hopefully it's fixed on the album.

@Nomos - yes, I'm totally with you on the lyrics. I'll be honest, I think Ashe was the better lyricist by far

I think if they go back in a heavier direction they would have been better off keeping Ashe.

But I still love Dan. Everyone check out the album he just helped release with his band, the self-titled ZETA. It's great.

Don't ever judge mixing based off of youtube clip. I produce music as a side job and Youtube's compression is just the shittiest around. It can make a Bob Ludwig remaster sound like it was recorded through an asshole.

This is clearly not a youtube problem. The spotify version sounds as shitty.

"Don't ever judge mixing based off of youtube clip"

Polaris sounds amazing on YouTube, compression ain't go owt to do with it. You can still hear a well produced song through shitty compression.

"Anyone else kind of cringing at the lyrics?"

Concept albums always have cringy lyrics.

"I think if they go back in a heavier direction they would have been better off keeping Ashe."

No idea how Ashe would sound on this, he sounded awkward on the One material when it got heavy.

Yeah, as it is it sounds nice. Would like to see where the song goes as they keep developing it, though.

I think bands need to just stop releasing lyric videos. Every time I read along with a song I hate the lyrics, but when I just listen to it with a different tab open it's just fine.

Well most if not all youtube videos are in 192 kbps AAC, which cuts off around 16-17 khz, so a whole lot of stuff gets lost. But I'm not saying this isn't bad mixing, spotify version only sounds slightly better (although unless you pay for Premium spotify streams in 160 kbps which is actually worse). Even the Polaris full album on youtube cuts off around 16 khz when a good mp3 of it would go up to around 20 or 21 khz, sometimes 22. Just saying to not ALWAYS trust mixing from youtube or non-premium spotify, not trying to excuse bad mixing if that's the case here.

I'm sure it will be better in the context of the album, but doesn't really hold up by itself. I guess this album will cement the kind of quality we can expect in the future from Dan...

The compression on this sounds terrible, may just be a bad upload, but Polaris was god awful. It was an absolute cringe fest, so I don't have high hopes.

What is going on with this production. The guitars are washed out and so thin. It's like the mids are all that they have turned up.
The drums are totally jacked.

Love Tesseract to death, kind of hoping this is not a song that they push though. Its fine, hopefully the finished product will be better, but it doesn't stand up to their catalogue thus far.

How can anyone say Polaris was awful? Even at it's worst it's still solid. It sounds like an album where TesseracT trimmed the fat. Altered State is good but there is some rambling in there that is stagnant at times. There is not a wasted track on Polaris.

there's an instrumental demo on Acle's soundcloud that's far better produced and just a more interesting song all together. Sounds like they fucked something while adding vocals to the mix cause i can't think for what other reason they'd butcher it this badly

I don't hate this anyway, it's a bit boring but it sounds like it starts half way through so might work better in context/when it's finished. Dan nails it as always

Dan is a great singer. I'm just not sure what went wrong with the mixing. I think someone messed up. Almost reminds me of an Uneven Structure record and the production they use on their guitars.
