Bowie monument scrapped

2017-03-23 by butcherboy | 19 Comments
Plans to erect a 30 foot-tall lightning bolt to honor David Bowie in his hometown of Brixton have been spurned after the crowdfunding campaign failed to hit its target. Only 50,000 pounds out of the estimated 100,000 were raised before the project's deadline. Donations will be returned to all those kind enough to have given to the project. The sculpture, tentatively titled the ZiggyZag will remain in the works until its creation is made more feasible.

He'll never be forgotten, with or without a monument.

We don't need a monument to remember him, his music is more important.

Couldn't they just make it smaller to fit the amount raised? While I agree Bowie is more than enough of a legend to need a monument to be remembered it would be nice to have.

They'll probably make another kickstarter but for a 15 foot statue instead.

i'm guessing it has to do with city regulations and federal red-tape.. as in, you can't just put a smaller statue where a 30-foot one got cleared..

My guess is it probably has more to do with delivering on what they promised. If people contributed expecting a 30 foot statue, you can't just turn around and give them a 15ft one without clearing it with them first. So a new campaign might be necessary altogether

be nice if they put a memorial plaque on the London building where the Ziggy Stardust cover was shot, wouldn't need 100,000 pounds for that.

He gave us true monumentality through his art. From Hunky Dory to Ziggy to Aladdin to Low to Outside to Blackstar... These were the skyscraping monuments that took the world of music by storm and influenced many upon many of our favorite artists. To have a huge sculpture in his name and resemblance would be great, but his art will always live on in our memory with or without it.

A fuck off great zig-zag stuck in the middle of Brixton is definitely the best way to represent one of the all time musical greats....pffft.
Who comes up with this shite? Gentrified hipster brats who haven't got the first fuckin clue no doubt.

the article said they only raised 50,000£ out of the expected 900,000£ - almost a million pounds? Yo - jump into your local thrift shops and spend the 50K£ on copies of his albums and glue them together. Itll be sixty stories high. To think of how much revenue this guy brought to the country, the least they can do is accomodate this. 900K£ - they should be ashamed of themselves.
