Tony Conrad, writer, video artist, filmmaker, composer and a pioneer of the drone genre, has died at the age of 76 from complications of pneumonia in New York. Conrad is best known for his contributions to the burdgeoning experimental scene in 1960s New York, and was responsible for the meeting between John Cale and Lou Reed that would spawn the creation of The Velvet Underground. Conrad also worked with the legendary krautrock band Faust, Throbbing Gristle's Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, Keiji Haino and Jim O'Rourke. Conrad had been a member of the State University of New York at Buffalo since 1976, teaching in the Department of Media Study until his passing.

Although I am not a crazy fan for his work, I actively enjoy both noise and drone music, so this loss is felt in my heart. RIP

2016 claims another one. Never heard of him and don't care much for drone music, but he created the Velvet Underground so that's pretty cool.

RIP

he didn't, he was a friend of John Cale. Both went to Pickwick Studios to record something, and while there, Cale met Lou Reed. The rest is history.
