Favourite DGD song, so was stoked to see it was the first single from this live record. While Jon's screams took a bit of getting used to I really like it now.

EDIT: added a 'so'

I don't like mess' vocals in this and tilian doesn't sound as strong as Kurt did in this song but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because it's a live track. The instrumentation is spot on but it's still not better than the studio version.

At first I thought this was going to be various live recordings from the different vocalists over the years, but I think studio sessions with Tilian will still be an interesting listen

Kurt will always be my favorite DGD vocalist, but Tilian is doing a fine job with the cleans. Although, I would like him more if he didn't always rely on falsetto

I've always been of the mind that Mess tries to fit in too much into too small a space, and this definitely shows in spots. Regardless, he manages to pull it off at other points... man I miss old school DGD.

''At first I thought this was going to be various live recordings from the different vocalists over the years''

Yeah, they should've done that, just bring every vocalist in for like 3-4 songs and record them like this, would've been way cooler IMO.

When I saw them a few months ago they were touring with Slaves and ALLB and they had Jonny and Kurt sing their respective Era songs. I don't know why they didn't put that in the record.

Now you people have turned on Tillian? Classic bi-polar sputnik. He's been on DGD's best album (instant gratification) and is imo their best clean vocalist.

I don't think anybody's turned on him

also I thought IG was one of their best for a bit but my mind has changed on that

in every actual live performance I've watch in tilian, he sounds absolutely terrible, even if this was recorded live, it was still recorded professionally and therefore put through the process in post production to make him not sound like crap

''Now you people have turned on Tillian?''

I mean I like Tilian, but just let each respective vocalist do their song if you're going to make a live compilation album. It's not the same hearing Tilian sing this when it's really Kurt's song. Plus I'd love to pop in the cd (or pop on the record, whatever) and go through each DGD era in 12 tracks.

this isn't falsetto. its just his vocal range.

"this isn't falsetto. its just his vocal range."

In this particular song he doesn't use very much falsetto, but on his own songs he utilizes falsetto far more than he should. I mean, falsetto is nice to hear every once in a while, but not 80% of the time

Eh, this song was okay. Jon sounds super weak, and Tilian doesn't have the power Kirt had. I think this album might be a bit pointless.

This has always been my favorite song off of Death Star and I think they did a pretty great job. I do wish it was Kurt singing it though instead of Tillian though. Regardless he pulled it off.

The more I think about this album the more pointless it is, why the hell would they not just let the old singers sing their songs? especially since they were all on tour together. Would have been a way cooler release.

joshuahuntkc

@steakbyrnes learn what falsetto is. you're not going to win this one. He doesn't sing one note of falsetto in this track or 99% of other DGD tracks. There are a handful of his solo tracks that he utilizes falsetto. singing in an upper range as a male vocalist does not make it falsetto.

Sounds like a studio album, which is fine by me. Pretty cool. If nothing else, it'll be nice to hear a few songs I couldn't stand from those awful Kurt-era albums with Mess's vastly improved (over time) harsh vocals and Tillian.

The "live" versions of songs from AS and IG seem pretty pointless though.

I'm pretty sure it's just supposed to show people what they get when they see DGD live. They tour pretty relentlessly when they aren't in studio so it makes sense to show people what Tilian sounds like live.

and for those that are saying he sounds awful on live videos i've seen them live with Tilian a handful of times and he typically sounds great live. youtube videos don't do him justice.

I have a video up of him where he sounds pretty awful. I was there... he was awful for most of the songs, but he had no energy and seemed pissed the whole show. Maybe he was sick. Mess was and is pretty much always great.

All that being said, I have a hard time not loving anything DGD puts out and this is no exception.

Yeah I don't terribly mind if he's not spectacular live. The studio albums consist of 99.99% of the time I hear their music. He kills it on the records, and I can live with that and still give this band some of my money.

@Dmax28 thats what i'm saying! I've seen him in a small venue, and two mid level venues with no production aside from a little verb and compression and he sounded great each time. The first time I had no expectations because he hadn't even put out an album with DGD and he was outstanding, it was note for note. He's forsure a good to great live vocalist.

As a long time fan of the band, I'm really glad that they're doing this album. It gives people a glimpse into this era's live show, and breathes life some of the notable songs in their back catalogue for newer fans who may not have heard the older material. I've had the pleasure of seeing them with Tilian at least 3 times and I've been wanting to hear his rendition of the songs in a better quality for awhile now. I think he really does justice to the old songs while also adding his own personality to them to keep them fresh. Kurt's always going to be my favorite, but I loved the high notes in the bridge. Also, my biggest complaint with the newer material is the squeaky clean production so it's cool hearing a more raw live recorded version. Also, they're releasing a new album this fall so this will hold fans over til it comes out. I definitely understand why people who aren't into the band wouldn't like this, but I think it's really cool that they're doing for the fans.

Tides of Man was really nice, tbh. But yeah, I've always seen Daryl as a good fit for this band. (In my head, at least) Because not only are their live shows weak in the clean dept right now, but their guttural game has never been strong live or studio-wise, for that matter. Daryl could easily give this band that oomph it needs to move forward. But that'll never happen. So whatevs.

Jon Mess ALWAYS looks like he's forcing himself beyond belief and it's a big turn off in the live setting. Idk, maybe that's just my opinion. Last time I saw Will give it a go (screaming) live, it was flat out bad too.

Agreed for DBMII, his vocals (specifically tracks like pounce bounce) along with his lyrics made his performance the most memorable.
