Podwerchair, Oh Yeah 2007-06-12 by samthebassman | 10 Comments | Powderfinger and Silverchair will co-headline a national tour in what is being billed as a "must see" event for Australian rock fans.
The Across the Great Divide Tour will see two of the country's most successful bands play venues in every capital city and 14 regional centres - in a massive big-top tent where venues aren't big enough - from late August.
At a joint press conference this morning, band members joked about which band's name appeared first on the tour posters (it's Powderfinger) and who would play last (Powderfinger again).
Asked if that was a touchy issue, Powderfinger's drummer Jon Coghill joked: "Yes, very thorny," adding that the lineup could change "depending on how much money these guys (Silverchair) have".
But Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns said he was "more than happy to play first".
"There was never any discussion or argument," Johns said.
"We're definitely comfortable with that."
The tour will kick off in Silverchair's hometown of Newcastle on August 29 and then play Powderfinger's Brisbane backyard on August 31, before hitting major cities including Darwin and Cairns and regional centres including Mildura, Toowoomba and Bendigo.
Rumours of a joint tour have been bouncing around the Australian music scene for weeks - ever since it was revealed members from both bands had formed a new company called Powderchair.
Asked who had cooked up the tour, Powderfinger's lead singer Bernard Fanning said: "Probably our managers."
"They were banging some ARIAs together," Fanning told reporters in Sydney.
The bands first met in 1994 when both supported heavy metal outfit Pantera in Newcastle.
Powderfinger's bass player, John Collins, said they appreciated each other's music.
"I think it's pretty easy to have some fun with this (tour)," Collins said.
The Across The Great Divide tour is being presented by Reconciliation Australia and the bands say they want to promote reconcile.org.au - which aims to reduce the 17-year gap in life expectancy between indigenous and non-indigenous children.
"It's an issue both bands believe in," Fanning said today.
"We think it was time the mantle was retaken up publicly."
Fanning said Australia had been "distracted" from the issue of reconciliation over the past 10 years and he wanted to help reignite the debate.
Powderfinger and Silverchair share the record for the most ARIAs (Australian Recording Industry Association awards) won by an Australian band, with 14 each.
Last week, Powderfinger released Dream Days At The Hotel Existence, their first studio album in four years.
In March, Silverchair released Young Modern, their first new album in five years.
Tickets for the Across The Great Divide tour go on sale on July 9.

Finally, a gig worth seeing in Darwin.
| | | Its going to go on for 9 weeks. I just heard it on the news. They're visiting every capital city and 14 other smaller towns.
| | | $99 for a ticket, what a joke, even though Powderfinger and Silverchair are good bands and at the forefront of Australian music, its pretty steep.
| | | They do seem to be the forefront of Australian music.
Very fucking depressing, tbh.

| | | Silverchair were one of the crappest live acts I've seen when I saw them at New Years. Powderfinger on the other hand, will be great.
| | | Yeah, just read $89.95 is steep for a ticket, considering the Big Day Out shows go for about $115.
| | | Powderfinger are so meh. Silverchair are ok, but I won't be going to this.
| | | podwer haha
| | | Yes, everyone laugh at my inability to sepll.
