A7X and Arin IIejay part ways

2015-07-23 by daysofthunder | 58 Comments
Avenged Sevenfold will be on the search for a new drummer, as the band announced today that it will move forward without Arin Ilejay. Ilejay joined the band in 2011 following the departure of Mike Portnoy, who replaced original drummer Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, who died in 2009.

The band posted this statement on their website:

Hello Everyone –
We are writing this to inform you all that we will be moving forward without Arin IIejay as our drummer. Arin has been nothing but a positive energy and monster drummer for us over the past 4 years. We love the guy and always will. We are and will always be grateful to him for helping us to move forward through some very dark times. Creatively though, we felt we needed to move in a different direction. While we can’t say more at this time, we are excited for the future and looking forward to sharing our plans soon with the greatest fans in the world. As always we appreciate your understanding and unwavering support.
With Love –
Matt, Zack, Brian, Johnny

Not a bad drummer, but was hardly impressive on HTTK

He struck me as someone who didn't really fit in. And I think they held his talents back too.

Guess they realised they could use garage band samples and get the same results for a fraction of the cost

With their directon, Lars could fit in well. He can maybe learn the simple rum lines on HTTK at least. XD

His drum parts in HTTK were so boring. Even if they wanted to go for a more straightforward hard rock sound, it was still boring. Also, Portnoy was a session/touring drummer for them, not an actual member.

this dude got the rawest deal in the history of raw deals

first he tours with the band for like 2 years and they don't even acknowledge him as a member of the band. then when they finally do, they make him play parts on their crap album that are so simple people actually think he sucks

Bring Portnoy back [2] I think this would be a good opportunity to do that and I'd love to see it, especially if they give him songwriting privilages. Not sure how it'd work out with the winery dogs and flying colours though....

I think people are forgetting that Arin just did what the guys told him. I've read interviews with Arin and he said he was bummed out when he wasn't allowed to do crazy drum fills on the album. Besides, I've seen A7X live with Arin on the drums and he played the old stuff and did a fantastic job!

Seems to me they don't want a permanent replacement for the Rev and just want to keep switching session/touring drummers.

Oh it's a well known fact Arin is actually a skilled af drummer. Why they made him play that badly on HTTK I'll never know. Unless it was to make sure fans never truly warmed to him as a suitable Rev replacement. Hope Arin can get a gig where he can show how good he is on drums.

He was competent but didn't bring much to the band creatively. His drumming felt very barebones on HTTK overall (then again I thought it was their worst album as a whole.)

Looking forward to seeing who they recruit next.
