Ornette Coleman dies aged 85 2015-06-11 by DrJohn | 16 Comments | Born on March 9, 1930, Randolph Denard Ornette Coleman was one of the most unique and innovative musicians of the 20th century. Showcasing a preference for the alto sax he pioneered the free & avant-garde jazz movement of the '60s. In 2012, his groundbreaking release The Shape of Jazz to Come was added by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry. He died on June 11, 2015, in Manhattan.
