Waxahatchee streams Ivy Tripp

2015-03-30 by dimsim3478 | 14 Comments
Alabama indie music sad person Katie Crutchfield is streaming her third solo album under the moniker Waxahatchee, entitled Ivy Tripp, today on the NPR website ahead of its April 7 release via Merge Records. Despite leaking in its entirety in early February, Crutchfield has been building hype for Ivy Tripp with published articles and pre-release songs, bolstered by an acclaimed performance at SXSW earlier this month. Crutchfield is set for a long run of U.S. and European dates beginning on the day of the album's release, in addition to her Australian debut with two shows down-under announced just this week.

On Ivy Tripp, Waxahatchee's simple, emotionally devastating aesthetic--having only just been subjected to the full-band treatment on her last album Cerulean Salt--is expanded upon with a much broader instrumental pallet than ever before, applying a range of timbral effects and production tricks to the core instrumentation of vocals, guitar, bass and drums. Coupled with this deeply satisfying sense of variation is Crutchfield's absolute best vocal performance yet, her arresting pop melodies imbued with a whole new dimension of expressive articulation. It's a simultaneously visceral and dreamy affair; Crutchfield said of the album:

"My life has changed a lot in the last two years, and it’s been hard for me to process my feelings other than by writing songs. I think a running theme [of Ivy Tripp] is steadying yourself on shaky ground and reminding yourself that you have control in situations that seem overwhelming, or just being cognizant in moments of deep confusion or sadness, and learning to really feel emotions and to grow from that.

The title Ivy Tripp is really just a term I made up for directionless-ness, specifically of the 20-something, 30-something, 40-something of today, lacking regard for the complaisant life path of our parents and grandparents. I have thought of it like this: [Waxahatchee's last album] Cerulean Salt is a solid and Ivy Tripp is a gas."

nah you might not care about this tbh. i'm just really enthusiastic about simple, concise pop writers like katie and radiator hospital and the pillows and tony molina and alex g and tancred and house boat and the mountain goats to a lesser extent but that sort of music doesn't seem to resonate super deeply with most people.
