James Blake wins Mercury Prize

2013-10-30 by AliW1993 | 24 Comments
Electronic musician James Blake has won this year's Barclaycard Mercury Prize with his second LP, Overgrown.

The Londoner triumphed from a shortlist of 12 records, featuring big names such as Arctic Monkeys, David Bowie and Disclosure.

Blake picked up a cheque worth £20,000, and follows in the footsteps of greats such as Primal Scream, PJ Harvey and Pulp... and Speech Debelle.

It's a shame that Speech Debelle faded back into obscurity, her first album was great.

Surprised he got it, honestly. Not a slate against the album, but I thought Bowie was going to take it

why is it a dumb prize?? its just the best of a smaller pool of musicians ... and at least these judges aren't blinded by record sales and choose an album based on their merits ... at least I would like to think so

Aside from the BRITS (which are purely corporate backslapping) it's the biggest accolade the UK music
industry has to offer. They do ultimately judge it on artistic merit, but the increasingly chart-
friendly shortlists and the fact artists/labels have to pay £200 just to enter dents its credibility
somewhat.

I like James Blake as an artist and I enjoy Overgrown, but I'm not sure it's Mercury-winning material.
I think he has a classic in him, but for me this record falls slightly short, especially in its second
half. His potential is enormous but there's still plenty left to be realised. Having said that, Jon
Hopkins aside, it was probably my favourite record on a very average shortlist.
