"New" Mountain Goats Song 2013-07-19 by Aids | 10 Comments | Rumors of a follow up to 2012's Transcendental Youth from John Darnielle and his Mountain Goats have not yet started bubbling, but there is some breaking news to report: He has cleaned his office.
Invigorating reporting, I know. But wait, there's more! While cleaning said office, he discovered a CD marked "New 02" containing songs that were recorded during the 2002 We Shall All Be Healed sessions, but never released and long-forgotten. Sorting through the rubble of the decade-old mixtape, Darnielle has chosen to release one choice cut via his tumblr page, "You & Me & A High Balcony." It is a sombre tune, thematically relating to the storyline on We Shall All Be Healed but yet seems to exist in its own unique world. In his own words:
"It audibly doesn't really belong with the songs from We Shall All Be Healed: it shares some themes (meth, tawdry motels) but is formally in a pretty different ballpark and it’s also not very personal, whereas the songs that did end up making We Shall All Be Healed marked my first steps toward writing from direct experience. "
