The French are just cautious because of high profile incidents in the past (including that shooting up of a Jewish school a few years ago) so it's perfectly reasonable that they'd want to look into any suspicions which may arise as soon as possible (and if my studying of Contemporary French Studies at uni is anything to go by that's exactly what they've been doing). Varg's history is probably why the French police are taking swifter action with this one.
