Prince: Too Sexy for Football? 2007-02-07 by pulseczar | 23 Comments | Prince's performance at the 41st Superbowl this past Sunday has been praised as one of the best in history. However, bloggers and critics have started criticizing Prince's guitar performance as inappropriately phallic, specifically, the part where Prince's shadow is projected, which has been called, "a rude-looking shadow show," by Daily News critic David Bianculli, also adding that it was, "embarrassingly rude, crude and unfortunately placed." This might get the FCC involved, who have been particularly picky about decency ever since Janet Jackson infamously had one of her fun bags exposed a few Superbowls ago.
Let me just say, when hasn't the guitar been a phallic symbol? From Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Page to the great CC Deville, the guitar has always been a giant, loud penis in rock music. And Prince is one sexy motherfucker, what were the critics expecting? Next Superbowl, they'll probably have to get Clay Aiken or Bizarre from D12 for everyone to finally shut up about sexuality. While this news is filed under Prince, I wish there was a band called "The 50s Are Coming Back."

Of course.

like in Purple Rain when he jacks off his guitar and it shoots all that guitar juice
| | | I believe it's also where the term 'prog rock wankery' came from. ie. wanking the fretboard of a giant penis.
It all seems to fit...
| | | If you do not stop posting such graphic phallic imagery, I will have to report the both of you.
| | | They're just jealous that Prince was the highlight of the super bowl.
| | | I always found the performances better than the actual game
| | | even though the foo fighters cover was an odd choice, He still rocked the hell out of the that place, the lightning and rain only made it more epic.
For someone to complain that PRINCE was be "Too sexy" is just stupid, its prince.
| | | lmao fun bags
| | | Nice job pulse
Prince rules so hard.
| | | Prince gets me hot.
| | | Right, because heaven forbid somebody inserts a little phallic imagery into the ENTIRELY un-homoerotic game of football. I mean, the closet-cases are having a hard (no pun intended) enough time surpressing the urge to pop a boner every time the center bends over withOUT Prince making vague references with his guitar.
| | | Generally, the half-time show is just a cue that I've not been drinking heavily enough. But this year's just had so much more umph. Prince rocked the shit out of the Superbowl. You presented this really well, pulse.
Prince > The Super Bowl Shuffle
| | | Hahaha..."great" CC Deville. Sweet article. Did anyone see some of the commercials during the Super Bowl? Why is the FCC worried about Prince when there are disgusting man-boobs bouncing all over a Chevrolet window?
| | | now I really want to see his performance
funny story
| | | I thought Prince really sucked, what was even redeeming about it? I mean the Foo Fighter's version of Best of You or whatever was bad enough, only Prince raped it to an even worse state. Ughghghghghgh.

His performance was amazing, I have no idea what you're talking about. Do you even like Prince? If not, why do you even listen to music?
| | | His performance wa nothing short of amazing. I downloaded it and have watched it again and again. And the Foo cover was outstanding, IMO. The way he tied it in with Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower (i say Hendrix because of the electric version). And his guitar playing? OMG, that was the best thing! He brought the goods, big time. Really, really blew that shi.t out. His Ike and Tina cover (of a Creedance song), the opening, the closing, no way did it suck on any level!
| | | I think the size of the event is part of it. Plus it was pretty good the way he just came out and kicked butt like that. Also I think a lot of people (believe it or not) are still kind of unaware of how dynamic and exciting a live performer he is. Compelling, even. So when they witness that sort of performance from him they are very impressed.
I must say I myself was not surprised, but he did impress me. Especially with the guitar playing. It was really loud and he did a great job creating excitement with it. Seems he knew he needed to give a "rock" show and from beginning to end (the We Will Rock You intro, etc..) thats exactly what he did. I found his performance not to be the best he is capable of, of course. But it was electrifying within the context of a normally bland SB halftime show.

I don't like Prince so you're right. I shouldn't watch him and I shouldn't even voice my opinion on current happenings in the world of music I dislike. Man, I wish I knew this before, thanks!
I thought his guitar playing was pretty terrible to be honest. The soloing was just expressionless...Tons of off-key bends and then this oh-so-climactic 3 note legato move that he did in the two solos I heard...Uninspiring.
But whatever, sorry I got no pleasure out of the show either. The grandiose budgetless crap doesn't really pull me in at all either.
