Muse? TesseracT? Fly From Here? God fucking damn.
|
| |
this kind of rules
|
| |
Decent list, but no Volta? They were certainly one of the defining and most influential progressive rock bands of the new
millenium.
Also, I like Muse just fine, but they're hardly progressive rock.
|
| |
Neither is Radiohead
|
| |
This seems pretty sweet but what's with Muse in here?
|
| |
Oh, I missed them. And I agree, MeatSalad. I'm a huge Radiohead fan, but they're not prog-rock either.
|
| |
gay
|
| |
Oh, I missed them. And I agree, MeatSalad. I'm a huge Radiohead fan, but they're not prog-rock either.
They are pretty damn experimental. One could argue.
|
| |
Experimental=/=prog. If that were the case then shit like AnCo could be on here.
|
| |
Some good ones here.
|
| |
Some bad ones too though. And some truly great shit missing completely.
|
| |
^Exactly. Matthew Bellamy/Muse being nominated for "Guiding Light" and "Visionary"? As much as I like Muse, this is not
right.
|
| |
Where the fuck is The Mars Volta?
|
| |
"^Exactly. Matthew Bellamy/Muse being nominated for "Guiding Light" and "Visionary"? As much as I like Muse, this is not
right."
They probably think Survival is a good muse song too
|
| |
@Meat Salad
After Black Holes, I've kind of tuned out from Muse. I still like a lot of their songs but I hardly ever listen to their stuff anymore.
|
| |
Same here paperback. They just got cheesier with their lyrics and music as they went on, and it's only getting worse.
|
| |
Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel as well.
|
| |
Coheed?
|
| |
Lol coheed isn't prog
|
| |
lack of Mars Volta ftl.
Great to see TesseracT there. also, Kate Bush better win for prog god.
|
| |
Roger Waters will win in all likelihood due to popularity
|
| |
But dillinger isn't a prog band either
|
| |
Imo, Anthem section is defo lacking Anathema - Internal Landscapes and Rush - Headlong Flight, and prog-or-not, Muse should not be here
|
| |
Ehhh I dunno man. More jazz/jazz fusion stuff than anything really
|
| |
No Animals as Leaders? I know they arent progressive entirely but they have elements of it.
|
| |
labeling yourself progressive isn't progressing music.
|
| |
Thanks for that, cone
|
| |
Progressive Rock: Now a more stereotyped tag with brand new awards!
Anyway, the results will be certainly interesting, at various levels.
|
| |
Where the fuck is Dream Theater?
|
| |
Glad to see Steve Hackett here. He is the king of prog.
|
| |
"Roger Waters will win in all likelihood due to popularity"
-And rightfully so, in my opinion. Especially among this particular list. He was certainly the driving force in Pink Floyd's best known efforts. Though I would like to see David Gilmour win something in this.
|
| |
wtf
|
| |
Mars Volta sucks, stfu whining about why they aren't here
|
| |
you suck and they do belong here.
|
| |
What the hell do half of these category names mean
|
| |
lol Nightwish being prog.
But really they should just give Rush every award and be done with it.
|
| |
wtf [2]
|
| |
I was half-expecting a Skrillex album to be on here.
|
| |
Peter Gabriel/Genesis for everything. Except Album of the Year. Friggin' Rush all the way, boys.
|
| |
progmaster will jizz his pants
|
| |
Friggin' rights he will. I've already jizzed mine.
|
| |
Hah, even the categories are pretentious.
"Progressive" is a silly tag anyway, and can be argued to mean pretty much anything slightly artsy now.
|
| |
Nah man. Prog is friggin' moogs n shit.
|
| |
half these nominations are retarded
|
| |
Regardless of how I feel about the overall list, congrats to Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel for all of the accolades they got and it's nice to see Can and Fripp listed in there too.
|
| |
saw TesseracT, tears of joy
didn't see Animals As Leaders, tears of hatred for the progressive community
|
| |
"saw TesseracT, tears of joy
didn't see Animals As Leaders, tears of hatred for the progressive community"
Good god I want to throw up at this post and your ratings
|
| |
Lack of King Crimson in the Lifetime Achievement category. So sad.
|
| |
It needs more Tool! Also, it's nice to see Steven Wilson here but his work with Porcupine Tree is far superior...unless this is a list of recently released albums...
|
| |
Also, where are The Arcane Insignia? Best Acoustic Prog Rock band there is!
|
| |
Nice to see so many nominations for Steven Wilson, he's a really cool dude. Still, why are Muse and Radiohead on these lists ? Even more, why Visionary ? Also, like other mentioned, why no Mars Volta ?
|
| |
No Geddy Lee in Prog God. Somebody shoot these bastards.
|
| |
If anybody from Rush, should've been Neil Peart. Frig, actually you could put all of them in there.
|
| |
Peter Gabriel should win that though. He's a friggin' legend, man.
|
| |
Where's Dream Theater on album of the year? Their new album is one of the best they've ever released
|
| |
Not as good as Clockwork Angels. Rush would've schooled Dream Theater anyway.
|
| |
And new Dream Theater isn't that amazing, Weather Systems is better, and I'll probs like Clockwork Angels more when I get it
|
| |
Anthem:
Squackett - A Life Within A Day
AOTY:
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Prog God:
Ian Anderson
|
| |
Agreed.
|
| |
Also, I like Muse just fine, but they're hardly progressive rock.
Their fans wish they were
|
| |
What the heck is "progressive" anyway? As it turned into a radio tag, it lost most of its sense to keep calling anything "progressive".
|
| |
TesseracT should win the "new blood" award.
|
| |
Lol, wow, Muse and Nightwish.
|
| |
I saw the DT/King Crimson Projeckt recently. Should be with the options for live act...
|
| |
those aotys are kinda messed up
|
| |
what the heck is this
|
| |
I guess Fair To Midland doesn't have enough albums to be on this.
|
| |
People feel special tagging their favorite band as "progressive"
@MarvinLapsus - It's supposed to be music that "progresses" rock further in to artistic directions by borrowing elements from various forms of "art music" like classical or even jazz and bucking conventional song structure to make it more "intelligent" and somehow "artistic", hints the "progress" part. (of course plenty of cutting edge music does this but it will be argued and debated whether or not it's "progressive" because it doesn't have the typical "prog" elements laid down in the 70s)
What you usually get is pseudo-intellectual people that wet themselves over the novelty of uneven time signatures, songs over 10 minutes (usually getting there by jammed out solo breaks), D&D fantasy, concept albums and organ solos.
Wearing a cape helps
(I actually enjoy plenty of the classics)
|
| |
Progressive, for me, is becoming an increasingly self-contradictory name, long songs =/= progressive, prog is following a template more and more, with some exceptions, and losing it's innovation
|
| |
King Crimson yessss
|
| |
Anthem:
Squackett - A Life Within A Day
AOTY:
Rush - Clockwork Angels
Prog God:
Ian Anderson
[2]
|
| |
Anthem:
Squackett - A Life Within A Day [2]
AOTY:
Rush - Clockwork Angels [2]
Prog God:
Peter Gabriel (sorry Jethro, pal)
|
| |
It was a toss up between Anderson and Gabriel for me. Ian just edged it cos Tull are my favourite prog band.
|
| |
Peter Gabriel is a god in his own rights, but musically, Ian wins.
|
| |
Is that Squackett album worth looking into?
|
| |
Yeah I'd say so. Despite it being a colaboration Hackett is definitely the main driving force, which is by no means a bad thing.
|
| |
lol prog
|
| |
Ian would have been my second choice, 'cause he's friggin' amazing, and Nagrarok, yeah man. It's pretty sick, brah.
|
| |
@Nag, I've only heard its s/t so far, and it's progging hard. Just type Squackett - A Life Within A Day on youtube so to find couple more songs from the album.
|
| |
No Ne Obliviskaris fail
|
| |
You fellas should go ahead and put down some ratings then! And will do Jethro.
|
| |
I need to give it a few more listens to fully digest it but I think it's gonna be a 4 minimum, possibly a 4.5.
|
| |
sweet
|
| |
@AStableReference:
I agree with you. I mean, the English prog masters of the 70s were tagged as "progressive rockers" because they were the first to expand the classic song structures and blah, blah... But nowadays it seems that you have to borrow elements from this pioneers to be truly "prog". And that's quite anti progressive, I think. If we considered progressive anything that was made trying to innovate in a rock music context, Jethro Tull and Pink Floyd are no more progressive than The Velvet Underground or Judas Priest. They all tried to be original, but in different directions.
And that reminded me that there's no Tool among the nominees.
|
| |
Unless we are to say that there is a specific set of elements that are a goal that "progressive" music can reach, which would be one of the most pretentious and limiting things ever. That's the problem I have with the tag.
I know most people don't go that far and I'm just nit-picking, so blah.
|
| |
I didn't see Justin Bieber on the list but I know that somehow when they announce the winners that his name is going to be there.
|
| |
lel!1! XDD thumbs up
|
| |
I am so fucking stoked not to see Periphery or any of Periphery's members on here. Fuck that band
|
| |
yeeaaayuh tesseract
|
| |
Hell hath no fury like a Puzzles scorned m/
|
| |
The Award titles are so....prog.
|
| |
so...Jethro Tull, Rush, Yes, Radiohead, Dream Theater, Steven Wilson, and Opeth win everything ever? gotcha.
|
| |
No Devin Townsend
I'm mad
|
| |
i'm pissed
|
| |
No Ne Obliviskaris
I'm mad
|
| |
hahaha
|
| |
no periphery guys???come on............
|
| |
No Robert Fripp but they have Steve Hillage and Kate Bush?
|
| |
Robert Fripp is nominated for the Guiding Light award whatever that may be
|
| |
You're complaining about Periphery when they clearly ignored King Crimson and Devin Townsend?
They also nominated Mike Portnoy but no Neil Peart or even Danny Carey who are far more virtuosic in every imaginable way.
Thanks for pointing that out I missed Fripp on there and had a shit.
|
| |
they need their own awards because they can't compete with the rest of the genres
|
| |
well, yeah in terms of commercial exposure
|
| |
someguest is gay
|
| |
well, yeah in terms of commercial exposure
and quality
|
| |
someguest is queef

|

|
| |

|
| |
'and quality'
I'm sorry but I don't understand how anyone could be THIS ignorant
progressive rock has had a huge influence on today's music scene and bands like Pink Floyd and King Crimson are still worshipped by a lot of people for being among the best and most creative bands of all time
|
| |
yea someguest is gay

Standing on a golf course
Dressed in P.V.C.
I chanced upon a Golf Girl
Selling cups of tea
She asked me did I want one
Asked me with a grin
For three pence you can buy one
Full right to the brim
So of course I had to have one
In fact I ordered three
So I could watch the Golf Girl
Could see she fancied me
And later on the golf course
After drinking tea
It started raining golf balls
And she protected me
Her name was Pat
And we sat under a tree
She kissed me
We go for walks
In fine weather
All together
On the golf course
We talk in morse
|

Are you lost?
...yes
Because we don't know when we will die, we get to think of life as an inexhaustible well, yet everything happens only a certain number of times, and a very small number, really. How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that's so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more, perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless.
My eyes were jaded, so close to the centre I could not see
But now they are fixed and glaring at the sacrifice to be made
Now that I'm aware of the cycles I pray that I can deal
Now that I have shown you these cycles I pray that you can feel
In and out of the stray
Taking the bait
Feeling compelled to obey, betray
The isle of await
Running scared from their thought
Thinking I can summon some ancient truth before wrong
Seeking my nature, our nature with fear of being caught
Or have we been like this all along
The dawn of birth gives way to men
Age brings dimness to sight as it must
Death seals the eyelids on darkness once again
Augmentation of the dust
|
| |
Hey, you aren't supposed to post lyrics that are actually thought-provoking. (and not prog related, figures)
|
| |
I was born in ashes of molten hatred
Raised by demons in abodes of the dead
The Reaper's scythe I fall upon to light my path
Wrecked by mangled wounds of life
I have become become the resurrection of the Evil one
Y'know that I don't fucking care if I live or die
I need a bishop preaching fire
to get away with my sins
I despise everything I see
Ain't got respect for humanity
Never lived or wanted immortality
The Reaper's shadow I fall upon to obscure my path
Every day I'm being battered up until I bleed
You motherfuckas just leave me be
Ya could never give me cure for the pain I feel inside
I need a bishop preaching fire
to get away with my sins
I despise everything I see
I don't give a fuck if ya HATE ME!
Led by the Reaper I walk in the night
Show me the way to yer kingdom come
I believe in armageddon,
I've been baptized in alcohol
Embodiment of Antichrist
I'm living for my own demise
I was born in ashes of molten hatred
Raised by the demons in abodes of the end
The Reaper's scythe I fall upon to obscure my path
Wrecked by mangled wounds of life
I have become the resurrection of the Evil one
Y'know that I don't fucking care if I live or die
I need a bishop preaching fire
to get away with my sins
I despise everything I see
I don't give a fuck if ya HATE ME!
Led by the Reaper I walk in the night
Show me the way to yer kingdom come
I believe in armageddon,
I've been baptized in alcohol
Embodiment of Antichrist
I'm living for my own demise
If you Hate Me!
|
| |
I don't even know what's going on anymore.
|
| |
On a serious note, can someone tell me how "I need a bishop preaching fire
to get away with my sins" is actually what he shouts?
|
| |
The tomb of Hades, lit by flickering torchlight
The nether world is gathered in the glare
Prince By-Tor takes the cavern to the north light
The sign of Eth is rising in the air.
By-Tor, knight of darkness,
Centurion of evil, devil's prince.
Across the River Styx, out of the lamplight
His nemesis is waiting at the gate
The Snow Dog, ermine glowing in the damp night
Coal-black eyes shimmering with hate.
By-Tor and the Snow Dog
Square for battle, let the fray begin.
The battle's over and the dust is clearing
Disciples of the Snow Dog sound the knell
Rejoicing echoes as the dawn is nearing
By-Tor in defeat retreats to Hell
Snow Dog is victorious
The land of the Overworld is saved again.
|
| |
Snow Dog for the fucking win
|
| |
it's not what you have learned
but what they said about you under your shirt
you know they never will make sense of what you gave them
and now it's all down hill from here
well in case you break my fall we're bringing it home
patrick short flip and outside boundary lines
I'm running you down (Ooo Yeah) well nothing looks right from up here
inside out i'm still unclear about the things you might have said
in pieces they stagger indebted rush me to the emergency room
flat line equals frantic endeavor but I guess this will have to do now
patrick short flip and outside we're bringing it home
I'm running you down (Ooo Yeah) well nothing seems right from up here
inside out I'm still unclear about the things you might have said
hold on to the things you favor most
shift right and let it run down
if my peace could find a way out
let go of youthful honesty
