this will ultimately make or break them for me, as much as i loved their album when it came out the vocals are still the weak point and bands have taken what they did so much further and done it more interestingly since their first full-length came out.
|
| |
gonna rule hard
|
| |
Sweet.
@Dan: I'm hoping Spencer's vocals improve a bit. They're definitely the weakest point of the band, but I didn't mind "Passenger" too much.
|
| |
i expect many 1s upon its release
|
| |
Very nice. @bringonthebreakdown...Who has done what Periphery has done more interestingly at all?
|
| |
The whole band just keeps improving so this should definitely be a step up from their debut if anything
|
| |
Making or Breaking point, I agree. I never saw all the hype behind this band or believed that they were the pioneers of the djent movement. Anyway this band definitely has potential and I hope the album lives up to it.
|
| |
Stoked
|
| |
Their first release is still my personal favorite album that uses this style. I've seen and heard Spencer improve, and I'm sure he put as much effort as he could into sounding as good as he possibly can on the record. The rest of the band already kicks a ton of ass but hey, improvements from them will be awesome as well.
I'm more than a little excited to hear this.
|
| |
Literally never listened to this band before besides the slipknot cover that was posted here a few months ago. Sounded okay.
|
| |
They're nothing special
|
| |
Vocalist was so poor lyrically and sonically on the debut that I get past the second track. I hope he redeems himself on this release
|
| |
kinda sad guthrie govan would lower himself to this band though
Precisely my thoughts on this. Erotic cakes are going to taste a little bitter after hearing this.
|
| |
I have high hopes for this, since this is the first one where Spencer will be singing all songs that he wrote the vocals for; a lot of the older ones were written by past vocalists, then he's stuck singing them. From his guest spots with Corelia and the live videos I've seen, he's sounding a lot better - the whiny edge is disappearing and being replaced with some nice grittiness.
|
| |
Never got into this group much, always preferred Tesseract's 'One'. Will be interesting to see how each group improves/declines in their second albums.
|
| |
Holy Govan and Petrucci? Sick as fuck

Holy Govan and Petrucci? Sick as fuck [2]
|
| |
yea I'll check this out for guthrie and petrucci for sure
everything else, well we'll see, not expecting anything really
|
| |
will probably have a handful of nice moments, the rest being really shit :]
|
| |
^
story of your life, eh noctus
|
| |
y-yeah :[
|
| |
lol sweet
|
| |
Looking forward to it, judging from the studio updates the harsh vox have improved alot.
|
| |
why the hell is a God like Petrucci, and Guthrie who's decent playing with these chumps? lol wow
|
| |
Hopefully it's good.
|
| |
we live in hope
|
| |
why the hell is a God like Petrucci, and Guthrie who's decent playing with these chumps? lol wow
good question but with how wanky and overly gay petrucci's playing can be, Govan is arguably better
|
| |
yea northlane is way better
|
| |
lol. proggy hows it goin, i see you've been layin off the trollin lately
|
| |
"God like Petrucci"
lol
boring band with an awful vocalist.
|
| |
Don't have even the slightest interest to listen to this.
The Ralph kicks the shit out of this band.
|
| |
A toddler with a ukulele would kick the shit out of this band.
|
| |
"A toddler with a ukulele would kick the shit out of this band."
Well yeah. Touche.
|
| |
well clearly these guitarists enjoy and respect the band. so clearly they are not chumps. they are way more talented than you ass clowns. my buddy used to play in this band so i look forward to this.
|
| |
Why is the article picture of the former lineup and not the new one?
|
| |
Especially since the article is about a new album recorded with said new lineup.
|
| |
because no one has bothered to change said picture since said band is a piece of shit
|
| |
John Petrucci getting involved with Periphery is like Jeff Loomis soloing on a Keith Merrow album: 5 seconds of it will be worthwhile.
|
| |
will rule
|

to everyone wondering why JP is on the album. he is Jake Bowen's uncle.
this album is going to kill everything else that comes out this year

4.5 not even going to listen to it
|
| |
Definitely going to be checking this out. My hopes aren't too high for it though.
|
| |
I enjoy ever forthright a lot more than these guys... the vocalist (ex-periphery) is sooo much better
|
| |
JP is Jakes uncle? hmm so that explains how he toured with DT as JR's keyboard tech
|
| |
The one song they've released (Passenger) isn't promising. The snare sounds terrible, and the mix is overprocessed in general.
|
| |
God, Sputnik has so, so, so, so many ignorant fucks.
Looking forward to this. Gonna be boss.
|
| |
Literally never listened to this band before besides the slipknot cover that was posted here a few months ago. Sounded okay. [2]
Is this band worth checking out? What is DJENT by the way? From what I understand it's a sound not a genre?
I've asked this question before but never got an answer that made me fully understand.
|
| |
Stop asking questions and listen to a damn song on Youtube
|
| |
clicked the link and thought: "damn the singer looks like Charlie Kelly"
|
| |
Don't care a whole lot.
|
| |
Who is ignorant fade
|
| |
Might be awesome. I don't understand all the negative Meshuggah comparisons this band gets though, they're not even particularly similar minus the "djent" tone.
Some awesome songs on their debut, but the vocals tend to hurt it greatly. If Sponce has improved at all, this could rule.
|
| |
"Sponce"
I laughed hard.
|
| |
Comparing this band to Meshuggah is pretty ignorant in general. It's apples and oranges.
|
| |
The Meshuggah influence is there, especially in moments, and in the song "The Walk", but I think it'd be a stretch to say it's too much. And I feel like we'll find them moving beyond that, even as it is.
|
| |
Guthrie Govan will add something interesting to this, I'm sure. Stoked for the new album, but more fascinating guitar work isn't what they need. As said before, those vocals need to be addressed.
|
| |
They just need to be an instrumental band.
/end
|
| |
i pretty much agree Dot
|
| |
I'll third that notion.
|
| |
No way guys
|
| |
lol no reason to be a dick
|
| |
Their fist album had some great ideas, but it's welcome wore off really fast for me. I'll give this a shot when it comes out.
"They just need to be an instrumental band.
/end"
That'd be cool.
|
| |
The instrumental release of their self-titled was sweet.
|
| |
Hopefully they keep improving
|
| |
"Their fist album had some great ideas"
What, St. Anger?
|
| |
This band isn't interesting. They border on being absolutely dreadful.
|
| |
They really should be just intrumental... unless they find a not sucky vocalist. Spencer just sucks... barely any range when he screams and his singing voice is not pleasant... Their first album was only fun to listen to because, of the instrumentals. After a while though the vocals just ruined the whole album and I ended up by just the instrumental version.
|
| |
They just need to be an instrumental band.
But a lot of people like Sponce, and more importantly the BAND likes him. They obviously don't want to be just an instrumental band, and just because they released one instrumental album doesn't mean it will ever happen. That's like saying PtH should be only instrumental just because they released Fortress as an instrumental.
|
| |
His vocals have improved and I like his cleans
|
| |
I think they are a better band with vocals. I do think that Spencer has a ton of range. His style just doesnt mesh as well with the music as their previous vocals. I've heard 4 different singers do the Walk and that song definitely kicks ass with vocals. As with most bands ive ever heard, the vocalist is usually the last piece to really click and always improve with each album. Look at DK from Thrice. He wasn't that spectacular on IC or IOS but over time he became better and better. Or Jeff Moreira. The opposite of december is a great album, but ill take his vocals on you come before you any day. Anyway, I think hell continue to improve and this band will do some awesome things.
|
| |

Yeah but Durrzo, Rody Walker is actually good. Sponce is very meh. And Periphery is much more fun instrumentally than PtH
|
| |
"They really should be just intrumental... unless they find a not sucky vocalist."
the problemis with this whole djent thing bands are trying to add atmosphere and cleans to a sound that really shouldn't have them at all. I haven't heard one band pull off good vox in the whole sound due to these awful clean attempts
they should definitely just be an instrumental band
|
| |
I agree fo tha mos part
|
| |
"And Periphery is much more fun instrumentally than PtH"
wait what? Id take mindless guitar wankery over droning djent passages anytime.
|
| |
I'd hardly call periphery droning djent passages. I'd say they're pretty creative with their riffs. I'd call Meshuggah droning djent if anything. Whom I've been listening to the past week. While I enjoy some, it gets boring after a while.
|
| |
and features guitar solos from John Petrucci, Wes Hauch and Guthrie Govan.
Who the fuck cares?
|
| |
Screw you guys who think they should be instrumental. That's all I have to say. It's not worth arguing, it's subjective, so all I have is my contempt for you, gentlemen.
|
| |
league of djentlemen
Hopefully this is better than their debut.
|
| |
"Yeah but Durrzo, Rody Walker is actually good. Sponce is very meh. And Periphery is much more fun instrumentally than PtH"
"Good" is an opinion. I love Rody, but hey, there's a hell of a lot of people that despise his vocals, just like there's a hell of a lot of people that despise Spencer's vocals. But there's also shitloads of people that like them both. Isn't that how most bands are? I don't see why so people always throw the instrumental idea at Periphery, they're no different than any other band with a vocalist.
I hate Sikth's vocalist. THEY SHOULD BE AN INSTRUMENTAL ONLY BAND.
You can apply it to any band, doesn't mean you should.
|
| |
"good question but with how wanky and overly gay petrucci's playing can be, Govan is arguably better"
Honestly both are overrated, but Guthrie especially; people on Sputnik think he's one of the best in the world and he's just not. He is quite good but the majority of his stuff is boring.
"John Petrucci getting involved with Periphery is like Jeff Loomis soloing on a Keith Merrow album: 5 seconds of it will be worthwhile."
I forgot about that lol.
|
| |
band is shitty wankcore.
|
| |
You are shitty homocore
|
| |
And btw no core in Periphery anyway
|
| |
Are you kidding? Govan can rip anyone's head off. The man has every single style of music in the palm of his hand and can easily imitate any virtuoso at will.
|
| |
lol homocore nice one. this band is for kids who just found out emmure isn't cool anymore and want to look prog to fit in with all of the trendy 8-string djent kids.
|
| |
Haha ok auber time for you to be quiet.
And yes bloc my thoughts exactly
|
| |
It's amazing to me how in 2006 this website used to stroke Bulb and Periphery like it was their own 12-inch weiner.
Of course the vocals were iffy on the debut album - Nearly none of those songs were written to have vocals layered on top, and a majority of those songs were were written 5-6 years ago. It would've sounded a thousand times more fresh if it came out in 2008.
I honestly don't know whether this album is going to be killer or a complete blunder, but you have to give these guys some credit. I'm betting that it will be a gigantic improvement from self-titled.
|
| |
trendy 8-string djent kids.
Hey hey hey, these guys play 7 Strings
|
| |
I think I may be Spencer's lone fan.
|
| |
No matter what sputnik says, I will enjoy this. Even with the vocals.
|
| |
I also enjoy Spencer.
|
| |
I enjoy Spencer's vocals immensely, so, there ARE fans here.
|
| |
Yep Spencer rocks
|
| |
sorry someguest. next time ill check with you to see which parts of the news you care about.

"Mekkalayakay"
o_0 are you the same one that posted on the forums around seven years ago?
|
| |
Indeed. I still read the news on this site 8-)
|

goddamn, you're a forums legend. i guess that makes you officially the longest serving member here, i can't think of anyone before 2003

DREAM
And this is going to be extra amazing because Mrak is in it: PeriShores is the best formation possible for them.
