Regardless of wether the album did or didnt suck (it did), it's a great thing when artists can make the music THEY want to make, rather than being told what to make by a record company, or being pressured into something by the fans. Even though probably 90% of the population hated the album (me included), the other 10% that enjoyed it is enough to make Metallica happy, and they are allowed to be happy that only 10% of people liked it, because they are Metallica. He recognizes that luxury. Also, he points out that only Lou Reed took it hard, the internet didn't offend Metallica at all.

Just because Lulu wasn't all that great doesn't mean the "venture outside of the box" comment isn't true. Just look at Opeth. There have always been 70s prog influences in their sound, but they've never fully explored that. The band decides they want to do something different than what they usually do and expand their sound, everybody flips out.
