Jimi Hendrix guitar sold for $117k

A Jimi Hendrix guitar sold for hundreds of thousands of pounds at an auction of rock memorabilia in London, according to News.com.au.

A spokeswoman for promoter Magnum Communications said that a Fender Stratocaster guitar owned by Jimi Hendrix went for £60,000 (approximately $117,000).
It was one of 160 lots sold at the It's More Than Rock 'n' Roll auction at the Sound venue in

London's Leicester Square, fetching a total of £860,000.
The spokeswoman said a percentage of the profits would go to the Cancer Research U.K. charity.

About 150 people attended the auction, including members of bands THE CLASH and THIN LIZZY.
Others placed bids over the telephone or online.

"There were a few private investors over the phone from the United States, but most of these items stayed in the hands of people from the industry," the spokeswoman said.

Awesome, although I'd probably never pay that much for a guitar.

EDIT: Even if I had that much. This Message Edited On 11.30.06

I don't uderstand why people would pay that much for a guitar just because Jimi played it. He was a really good guitarist but that's a lot of money. It's all going to a good cause which is nice. I would love to own one of his guitars though.

Somebody has money coming out there a$$ obviously. I dont know which would be better to own, Jimi's guitar, or some of the acid he used to put into his forehead.

@MrKite: Either:
A.) They plan on donating it.
B.) They plan on re-selling it on eBay.
Most likely B.

EDIT: @f_u_c_t: The guitar, it lasts longer. This Message Edited On 11.30.06

^^I think Synyster1 is right, put the thing in a museum.
I would probably mortgage my house to own one of Jimi's guitars.

that's up the buyer if they want to donate to a museum (and it probably will end up there).
but for the most part auctioning it for charity is way more productive than just giving it away to a museum

It's most definitly a stratocastor so I'd say it's a good guitar. Maybe not in great condition, though.

I don't think it should be put in a museum. By the way, does anyone know if Dweezil Zappa ever sold his Hendrix guitar?

Some guy from the scorpions also owns a hendrix guitar, I think his name is Uli Scheckner.

Really, what good would owning his guitar be. Its nice to look at, but how much meaning would it have. I guess it depends on the person, but im in favor of the museum idea myself.
