Cradle of Filth drummer leaves

2006-11-22 by Thor | 16 Comments
Adrian Erlandsson announced his departure from CRADLE OF FILTH last week. He also announced that he is forming a new band with some as-of-yet un-named participants. In addition, he has started another band called Nemhain that features his wife Morrigan Hel as vocalist. antiMUSIC’s Morley Seaver did an interview with Adrian and here’s what he had to say about all the changes:

antiMUSIC: Well, the big news first. You've left Cradle. Can you tell us what led to your decision?

Adrian: I joined Cradle in the summer of '99 and have had some good times creating music with the band and playing live. But as a musician when things become too familiar, it is time to move on. I need a certain edge in everything that I do when that it gone it's time to move on. So I decided to leave and concentrate on other things.

antiMUSIC: What can you tell us about your other project? Is either James (McIlroy) or Martin (Powell) part of this group?

Adrian: I have been working with some 'serious players' for some time now. To me it is the ultimate metal band. With very catchy, hard hitting metal songs. We have about 9 songs at the moment and will have our demo ready hopefully by the end of the year. Then the band will be made official and everyone will know why I am so excited about this band!!!

antiMUSIC: How and when did Nemhain come to be?

Adrian: Me and my wife Amber have been talking along time about how amazing it would be to have a band together, creating music together, playing together and eventually touring the world together. We had some of our close friends over and realized that we had all the members that we need for the band right here in the room! In the excitement an acoustic guitar came out and there was the first Nemhain Jam! Amber already had a lot of lyrics and song ideas which Cherry and her started working on straight away. The fire and devotion within the band beats any band I have been in before!!!

In my dreams I hope that Nicholas Barker come back, as he is my favorite metal drummer.

This sucks. Hopefully Cradle will finally get a truly good drummer, although I liked Adrian.

Well Adrian was certainly fine for the band, but I honestly can't think of him ever really blowing me away. The stuff he does always struck me as solid metal drumming, but nothing really more than that. Barker always had more creativity.

Nick Barker is such an overblown drummer. His stuff is chiseled and linear, but he's played in numerous popular metal bands, so people who don't bother looking into more metal latch onto him as the best. He's just doing what George Kollias, Derek Roddy, Flo Monier, and Pete Sandoval do on a regular basis, only he's dumbing it down and playing it in a mucy fancier studio.

I prefer Adrian. He doesn't stick to constant blasting that many drummers make the mistake of doing.

I think that Barker has way more creativity on his later Dimmu and Old Man's Child albums than Derek Roddy and George Kollias ever had. They just play ridiculously fast and that's it. I've talked to experienced metal drummers about this issue before and just about all of them agree that Barker is much more well-rounded than the drummers you mentioned.

And so what if you play in a fancier studio? Cradle, Dimmu, and OMC are all awesome so it doesn't matter. People just like to bash the bigger bands because that's the cool thing to do.

And you know that I listen to plenty of extreme metal bands, so I don't think that my opinion is exactly ignorant. But hey, I'm not the super elite metal expert on here, so what do I know? :rolleyes:This Message Edited On 11.23.06

Calm down now, there's no need to get angry. My rant wasn't intended to be an attack on your opinion. To me, Barker is one of the more linear metal drummers out there. Roddy's ability to combine blast beats with both hands on a variety of symbols in perfect rhythm with his double bass is godlike, or so many metal drummer's have told me.

Can't we just be friends again? Group hug?

*hugs*

He's just doing what George Kollias, Derek Roddy, Flo Monier, and Pete Sandoval do on a regular basis, only he's dumbing it down and playing it in a mucy fancier studio.

Not to mention Sandoval has been doing it since the late '80s, and was very important in the evolution of Metal Drumming.

Anyway, I'd rather listen to a Dave Lombardo or Scott Travis than a Derek Roddy or Nick Barker any day of the week. Constant double kick and blast beats is fucking boring. This Message Edited On 11.24.06

Adrian's playing was rather dull in Cradle of Filth, but it fit the music I suppose. I like his brother alot more.

As far as the Barker discussion...yeah, Barker's overrated. When it comes to that style or whatever, I'd much rather listen to Jan Axel Von Blomberg, as well as most of the bands Jan has been a part of.

Out of the two most popular psuedo-black metal bands I like Dimmu Borgir better.
