Korn: The Original Dubsteppers

2011-11-29 by Deviant. STAFF | 170 Comments
Speaking to Billboard ahead of the December release of Korn's crossover album The Path of Totality, lead singer Johnathan Davis appeared only too eager to boldly announce that "We were dubstep before there was dubstep. Tempos at 140 with half-time drums, huge bassed-out riffs. We used to bring out 120 subwoofers and line them across the whole front of the stage, 60 subs per side. We were all about the bass."

He was also quick to praise the band's younger fans for not only accepting the group's new direction but for respecting dubstep as a whole.

“These kids are onto something completely innovative and new,” he said. “It’s pure and awesome and underground and heavy and different, not like stale-ass metal and rock’n'roll. I love them all, but the old-school metalheads are not open to change.”

He added: “It’s really cool to see glow sticks at the show, to see dance music culture infiltrating and becoming one with the metal community. At the last show, there was one mosh pit where they were moshing, and another with kids doing glow stick tricks. They were taking turns and shit. I think we’ve opened up a new style that both sides are happy with.”

While such distinguished dubstep labels as Tectonic and Hotflush have yet to release any statements regarding a potential record deal for the nu metal outfit, one can certainly speculate that armed with this new information one must certainly be on the cards.

Unsurprisingly, popular artists know little about the genre in which they used to play. The fact that he thinks "metal and rock’n'roll" are stale is laughable. Gonna assume from my very little experience with dubstep that they/he also doesn't know what he's talking about.

Brostep is a post-dubstep trend that has recently received increasing exposure, with the American producer Skrillex becoming something of a figurehead for the scene. In September 2011 a Spin Magazine EDM special referred to brostep as a "lurching and aggressive" variant of dubstep that prevails in the United States. Elsewhere it has been described variously as “dubstep with more anger to it" and "Americanized, garbage dubstep." Unlike traditional dubstep production styles, that emphasise sub-bass content, brostep accentuates the middle register and features "robotic fluctuations and metal-esque aggression." According to Simon Reynolds, as dubstep gained larger audiences and moved from smaller club based venues to outdoor and arena events, sub-sonic content was gradually replaced by distorted bass riffs that function roughly in the same register as the electric guitar in heavy metal. Dubstep "purists" have levelled criticisms at brostep because of its preoccupation with "hard" and aggressive sounding timbres. In the UK brostep has been jokingly called "bruvstep" and "mid-range cack." The English producer Rusko is credited with being the progenitor of brostep and during an interview on BBC's 1Xtra radio show he commented that: "Brostep is sort of my fault, but now I've started to hate it in a way...It's like someone screaming in your face for an hour...you don't want that."

But I've never been to a straight up dubstep show where glowsticks existed. Like, AT ALL. I just don't think the same people who are into glowsticks and that whole scene are into dubstep at all compared to house.

KoRn is so incredibly unhip right now. No one listens to them any more. Maybe in a weird way there is some truth to the statements. That I don't know. But I don't think many people will be able to look at any KoRn albums objectively for about another ten years. I vaguely remember a time long ago when KoRn seemed fresh and was one of the biggest bands in the world. No one I know wears JNCOs anymore either and the local Gadzooks has closed. "He's got a point, they experimented in so many different ways through the years, they really did pave the way for a lot of other bands. But just like limp bizkit, it's the cool thing to hate on them. I'LL TAKE KORN OVER THRICE ANY DAY."

"Frank when will you understand I don't take advice from trolls ever. Stay under your bridge you cursed creature you."

So when everyone says you've said something stupid, you consider it trolling?

You're in for a rude awakening someday.

Thrice isn't THAT much better.

Maybe 10x better than Korn.

lol honestly I've always disliked Korn...this just takes the cake though.

I actually like dubstep but so many groups and new artists are just piggybacking off of the hype

"... stale-ass metal"... He called metal stale-ass. Son, hand me my gun.
"... old-school metalheads are not open to change."... Uh... Devin Townsend?
"It’s really cool to see glow sticks at the show, to see dance music culture infiltrating and becoming one with the metal community." ... Seriously?! Fuck this.

Johnathan Davis. Can make metal anymore? Shifts to another genre and calls metal "stale-ass". Really mature.
