Chris Pennie leaves Coheed

2011-11-02 by Gee | 67 Comments
Drummer Chris Pennie has left Coheed & Cambria, according to a post from Pennie's Facebook page:

"Chris Pennie, accomplished drummer, founder of Dillinger Escape Plan and member of rock band Coheed and Cambria, announced today he is parting ways with Coheed and Cambria. The decision was mutual by both parties due to creative differences.

Pennie plans to focus his time on the various musical projects in the works- acclaimed metal band- Return to Earth (Metal Blade Records) who are currently writing their third album, his music production company Fight Mannequins, which just completed their first documentary score and producing two exciting artists whose records will be released in 2012.

"I am very thankful for the years that I shared the stage with the guys and want to thank the amazing, supportive fans that I've met while on tour, but there are a lot of exciting projects on the horizon, in addition to RTE and Fight Mannequins, that I feel require my absolute 100 percent commitment and attention. I feel that this is the right time to make that happen."

he's really good but he added virtually nothing to the band... let's be honest it's basically all claudio and travis anyway... don't get me wrong, Pennie is great, but Coheed was always too good for him

here's hoping for josh freese on the next record

@Deviant, the main arc was all tied up with the first four albums. Their newest YotBR was a prequel to it all. Claudio recently said the new album will be a pre-prequel. It's basically going even farther back to the creation of the universe and discovery of the keywork.

The thing is that YotBR was still technically part of the planned story. It was always planned with their first 4 albums being 2 (Second), 3, 4.1, 4.2, then going back to 1 for YotBR. Seems a bit weak to go back even earlier to me, but whatevs. Band's pretty much had their run in my opinion. I'd love to seem them pull it out and make something awesome again but I think their days of making exceptional music is behind them.

Bring back Josh! Bring back Josh!

I wish. I'd love to see the original lineup some day. Also, while Pennie is an amazing drummer, he really wasn't the right drummer for Coheed. Here's hoping the band makes an album at least as good as the first three.

Pennie was fun to watch with Coheed live, and it's a shame he's leaving the band.

That said, yeah, they'll find someone just fine to fill his shoes.

Hell, Marco Minnemann auditioned for DT... I'd love to see him in Coheed.

Wouldn't be too surprised if they got Portnoy in, he is a big fan after all.

Also this is good news; I love Chris but he didn't sit well in the feel of the music on most of the last album, in my opinion.

I'ts already been said, but Pennie was far too talented for Coheed from the start. Not a knock on them, I love me some Coheed, but he was always a poor fit. I'm actually surprised he stayed this long. It's been a tough few months for them, but I'm sure Claudio will pull it together.

I'm not worried. Claudio is the main guitarist, the singer, and the songwriter. It's always Coheed with him in there. All changing other members means is breathing a little new life into the background of his vision.

too bad. drumming on yotbr was killer and refreshing compared to the last album.
i wanna hear an album all about al the killer. or that actually prominently features the co&ca characters. just don't say that you're adding to a story arc you knew years ago would end with the last album.

Seriously... @ everyone who said bring back Josh Eppard, I'm a drummer and though I'll acknowledge that Chris Pennie was technically pretty awesome, he added jack sh!t, whereas Josh Eppard was a HUGE part of the sound that I associated with Coheed before they became garbage. Every album since he left has been trash.

He didn't shine like he deserved in Coheed. Better live than on album (YOTBR) but still to a minimum.
