Chris Cornell On Bond Theme

2006-11-19 by Jom | 16 Comments
On Friday, the latest installment of the James Bond series, Casino Royale, hit the big screen with new Bond Daniel Craig. One of the most important aspects of the beginning of the movie in nearly every Bond film is the opening theme.

In today's New York Post, Audioslave frontman Chris Cornell talks about his contribution "You Know My Name."

Citing Paul McCartney (who sang on 1973's Live and Let Die) and Tom Jones (who sang on 1965's Thunderball) as influences, Cornell had this to say about the song:

I decided that I was going to sing it like Tom Jones, in that crooning style. I wanted people to hear my voice. And 'Live and Let Die' is a fantastic song. Paul McCartney wouldn't have written it if not for that movie. I [also] wanted to write a song in its own universe. I knew I'd never have it again - a big orchestra - so I wanted to have fun with it.

They wanted a voice that fit well with his persona. They were looking for a singer who was unapologetically male, someone with introspection in his voice but not afraid to be masculine.

The track, with features an orchestral arrangement, is far removed from Cornell's familiar Soundgarden and Audioslave tunes. Despite the outcries of fans of those bands, Cornell responds by saying:

To me, there were always infinite possibilities, and now I'm singing a song in a James Bond film. As far as I'm concerned, I can do anything musically - the perception outside of that is none of my business.

Again, Casino Royale is in theaters now.

I saw the movie and heard the song. It was an okay song. It was basically a familiar bond type song with his vocals.

^ agreed. Nothing spectacular, but nothing terrible.

The movie was actually really good, which kind of surprised me.

Yes, the movie was very good, though I'll admit I zone out during the opening credits to any Bond movie.

I actually thought this song was excellent for an opening bond theme. My friend sitting next to me, (while coincidentally wearing his Audioslave sweatshirt) goes "Yo dude that was Chris Cornell!"

Oh yeah the movie was awesome

I'm thinking about seeing, although I'm more of a comedy fan it looks like it would be a good movie.

Why would fans be "outcrying" over his "far removed" track. It's a Bond theme ffs. I'd be wetting my pants if my favourite singer got that gig.
Haven't heard it or seen the film yet but I would like to do both

Man I can't believe the movie is getting such good reviews, I thought it would suck. I might have to get off my arse and go check it out on the big screen.

Well from what I hear Casino Royale is a pretty bad flick eh? Think I'll go see it. But Cornell... I wish he still did Soundgarden tunes, I'm sick of Audioslave. But I'm not saying that was a Audioslave tune, or is it? Ah damn suppose I should go see the movie then.
